An Introduction

The purpose of this book is to explore the major conceptual differences between classical and modern political philosophy and to understand how these differences have yielded competing conceptions of justice. If ancient and modern thinkers used a different set of constructs, definitions, and methods to explain justice, then it is our duty to understand them. It is also our duty to understand why they have such differences. 
Modern thinkers, beginning with Thomas Hobbes, developed a thought experiment-the state of nature-that allowed them to redefine well-established political terms (nature, happiness, virtue, equality, freedom) to determine what people were like in the absence of any external authority, that is, a state. The argument was so compelling that their adherents applied this logic to determine what they deemed legitimate forms of government. In doing so, they made classical articulations of justice appear irrelevant. 
This shift-a seismic move away from more than 1,500 years of political philosophy, validated the new approach and called into question the approach of classical theorists. As a result, we now inhabit a world that sees little political significance in the work of the ancients. The classical theory of Plato and Aristotle appears too subjective. It seems too ideological and at times mystical. Such a momentous shift in thinking has resulted in a change in the way citizens see themselves in relation to the state and more importantly, toward each other.

This multilayered work follows a group of Guantanamo detainees from a single Middle Eastern country, Kuwait, portraying their lives before their capture, to their experience at Guantanamo, to their ultimate release and the lives they have been challenged in remaking after returning home. It is an intimate look at real men held for years without charge and without hope. Eric L. Lewis has represented Guantanamo detainees for more than twenty years and he conducted the hearings that gained the release of the last two Kuwaiti 'forever prisoners.' As part of a committed team, he spent time with these men and their families, fighting to gain access to courts and navigating the politics and diplomacy of the Global War on Terror. Understanding the source of our current political and social malaise through our emotional responses to it We are in an explosive cultural moment. Whatever explanation for this is offered—inequalities, disaffection of political institutions, traumatic memory, woke culture, the rise of populism, the dominance of technology—it is the inescapable fact that we are in a period of palpable malaise. In Explosive Emotions, sociologist Eva Illouz explores the source of our discontent through a number of key emotions. Hope, disappointment, envy, resentment, jealousy, anger, fear, anxiety, shame, nostalgia, jealousy, and love are all embedded in the institutions of social life. These institutions—corporations, the consumer market, the university, the nation-state, marriage, and sexuality—shape our emotional lives. Illouz argues that hope was the emotional foundation of modernity—shaping ambition and promising improvement. But today, this hope has morphed into disappointment, envy, anger, or nostalgia—because, she contends, advanced techno-capitalism has overseen both a series of transformations in modern democracies and the decay of nationalism. Drawing on the insights of literature and philosophy, Illouz outlines the psychological structure of these emotions; mobilizing data from sociology and political science, she examines how and why they are deployed in society. Unbeknownst to us, she explains, emotions contain and enact the key ingredients of society. Norms, rules, social structures, and cultural guidelines are the invisible yet burning magma of emotions, the heart of their energy. Emotions continue the work of society inside the self. Mapping our epochal malaise, Illouz shows how and why all our previously established structures are unraveling.

Nafeesa T. Nichols analyzes how racialized and gendered spaces are presented in post-apartheid South African literature. Through the examination of four novels, Kopano Matlwa's Coconut (2007), Zukiswa Wanner's The Madams (2006), Niq Mhlongo's After Tears (2007), and Kgebetli Moele's Room 207 (2006), Popular Spaces in Post-Apartheid Literature highlights the interconnections between space, race, gender, and popular culture within the post-apartheid South Africa. Nichols not only explores how post-1994 literature attempts to represent the realities of the post-apartheid condition, but also reveals the innovative and radical contributions that these young authors of the early twenty-first century made within the literary world. This book mediates the dynamics and complexities of space in connection to race and gender, exemplifies the challenge of working with and in violent masculinist textual spaces, and conceptualizes the popular in connection with class, race, and gender struggles. Drawing on an interdisciplinary mix of Black feminist theory, feminist geographical perspectives, and spatial theory, Nichols provides a close reading of each of the selected texts, offering broader insights into the how Black subjects navigate various spaces of oppression. Through these novels, she shows how we are able to imagine the possibilities of liberatory spaces, celebrate local knowledge, creativity, the popular, and, most importantly, the beauty and resistance found in the everyday. In the end, this book contributes to the academic conversations that continue to take place surrounding gender, space, literature, and liberation in South Africa.
