This Palgrave Pivot aims to present a research-based, accessible analysis of the inner workings of the London stock exchange during the Georgian period.
Consolidating scattered archival sources and materials in one place, the book provides a solid historical basis for understanding the early modern stock market, ending with the formal creation of the Stock Exchange as an institution in 1801. Rather than going into detailed analysis of trading strategies and processes of the time, the book instead presents the ‘what‘, ‘where‘, ‘who’ and ‘how’ of the stock market operation, outlining the ways in which market participants negotiated trades, where these took place, and all the different types of securities that were traded. This engaging book will be of interest to financial and economic historians, as well as scholars in the humanities searching for a non-technical guide to the formation of the modern stock market.

 Warenhäuser veränderten das Wesen des Einzelhandels seit dem späten 19. Jahrhundert grundlegend. Ihre Einkaufspaläste waren monumentale Symbole der modernen Massenkonsumgesellschaft, die sie zugleich ermöglichten wie verkörperten. Wenige, zumeist jüdische Namen standen dabei im Vordergrund: Abraham Wertheim, Rudolf Karstadt, Hermann Wronker, Salman Schocken, Helmut Horten und natürlich Hermann Tietz und Leonhard Tietz. Die nach ihren Gründern benannten Häuser waren für lange Zeit die unbestrittenen Anziehungspunkte der Waren- und Kundenströme, ihre Schaufenster gaben den großen Städten ein Gesicht, sie zogen Bewunderer und Kritik geradezu magisch an. Erst seit den 1980er Jahren verblasste ihr Bild, als sie fast durchweg dem Strukturwandel zum Opfer fielen. An ihre Stelle traten neue Formen des Einkaufs, doch ist die Erinnerung an die große Zeit der Konsumtempel deshalb nicht untergegangen. Hermann Tietz/Hertie, dessen Geschichte in diesem Buch rekonstruiert wird, war eines ihrer herausragenden Beispiele. Es steht gleichermaßen für Größe und Erfolg wie für Verfolgung, Krise und Niedergang: von der „Arisierung“ in der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus über den phönixhaften Wiederaufstieg nach 1945 bis zum Bedeutungsverlust der Warenhäuser um die Jahrtausendwende.

Ob 'Kippcouch', 'Schneckenbecker', 'Kellerassel', 'Fliegender Holländer', 'Gockel', 'Knoblauch Ede' oder 'Rolli' - Spitznamen sind oft derb, zeigen aber auch Vertrautheit - wie in einer guten, intakten Familie. In die der Leipziger Straßenbahnfahrerinnen und ¿fahrer wurde der Autor Mitte der 1970er-Jahre aufgenommen, als 'Karussell-Muske'.
In diesem Buch entfacht er ein Feuerwerk der Erinnerungen, zugleich eine Geschichte des wichtigsten Verkehrsunternehmens der Messestadt in den letzten über 50 Jahren. Als letzte Überreste privaten Wirtschaftens wurden sie nach dem Fall der Mauer unversehens zu Hoffnungsträgern der Transformation. Trotz enormer Risiken behaupteten sich erstaunlich viele von ihnen in der Marktwirtschaft. Eine Welle von Neugründungen und die Abwicklung der großen VEBs hatten zur Folge, dass in den frühen 1990er Jahren mehr Ostdeutsche im Handwerk arbeiteten als in der Industrie.

This book, as the first volume of&nbsp;A General History of Chinese Accounting,&nbsp;addresses the origin and development of Chinese accounting in the long history that covers a time span from remote antiquity through the Warring States Period (476—221 BC). It starts with an introduction section that functions as the overarching framework for all the 12 volumes. Following the Introduction are two Parts, of which Part 1 delves into the historical origin of Chinese accounting, whereas Part 2 gives an introduction to Chinese accounting in archaic times. The examination of the origin of accounting practices in Part 1 suggests that by the&nbsp;Late Paleolithic&nbsp;Age, approximately 15,000 to 50,000 years ago, the primitive people in China had almost completed the transition from living as “subjects of nature” to becoming nature-conquering “subjects of production”, marked by their use of methods and rules for measurement recording, which signifies the beginning of China’s prehistoric accounting practices. Its significance lies in the role the accounting played in helping the people survive and ushering in the Neolithic Age, when evolution from primitive measurement recording to the development of the combination of numerals and writing symbols called “Shuqi” occurred. By the end of the primitive society, the prehistoric “Shuqi” had become more and more mature that it ultimately evolved into a new form in the age of civilization, known to all in the modern world. Chinese accounting in archaic times is addressed chronologically in various chapters respectively in relation to the Xia, Shang, and Zhou dynasties, the latter roughly covering the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, until the medieval period of China. It is found out that the accounting in the Warring States Period is a critical stage in the historical transition.&nbsp;The book series&nbsp;are targeted towards a very broad readership. With rich content, careful investigations and remarkable readability and accessibility, they are meticulously tailored not only for scholarly experts, educators and seasoned practitioners working within the realms of accounting, auditing and finance but also for laypersons with a keen interest in the history of Chinese accounting.&nbsp;

This anthology analyses Italy's economic interests in Austria and in East-Central and South-Eastern Europe in the first post-war years. Although the 'commemorative year 2018' led to an expansion of the state of research with regard to the political upheavals that took place after 1918, the broad and at the same time very relevant subject area of the economic, financial and structural developments of these years has hardly been addressed. An economic area that had grown over centuries, such as the Danube Monarchy, could not simply be cut up by new political borders. However, new structures were created in the post-war years, many of them still have an impact today. The 22 contributions by an international group of authors cover five thematic blocks: Political, economic and cultural perspectives; currency and public finances; economy, trade and infrastructure; business and entrepreneurship; population and politics. The material difficulties associated with post-war reconstruction were combined with an arduous process of building new institutional structures. Domestic political uncertainties and material problems intensified the social contrasts and led to an atmosphere in which the use of violence appeared justified. This volume therefore deals with a particularly difficult phase in the relationship between Austria, the successor states of the Danube Monarchy and Italy, and thus makes an important contribution to understanding the historical processes that characterise this area even today.
