A double volume containing two works of astonishing invention that blend theater with art and artifact. In these two works, Hancock explores the liminal spaces between language and silence, fiction and truth, and the known and the unknown.

Two plays from a wholly original artist that reach beyond the traditional boundaries of theater to engage in the tangible artistic landscapes of their invented subjects. In Master, Hancock creates the character of a 20th century African-American artist called “Uncle Jimmy” Clemens, who left behind an enormous body of work for which he was never recognized, now on display in an art installation. The Convention of Cartography is a traveling art exhibit featuring the collected works of a nomadic artist named Mike whose work has posthumously been collected and installed in a pop-up museum. In these two works, Hancock explores the liminal spaces between language and silence, fiction and truth, and the known and the unknown.

As the campus wrestles with its antebellum legacy, undergraduate student Sally finds herself locked in a more personal battle with Dean TJ, the white dean of students named after Thomas Jefferson, who shares his namesake’s predilection for grossly abusing his position of power over women of color. Amidst a swirl of marching bands, step teams, and bubbly tour guides, Sally must struggle to rewrite this too-familiar narrative, dismantle the wall of oppression, and embrace the dope ass future that waits beyond it.

In statements to the police, Smith claimed she had been carjacked by a young Black man. In&nbsp;Brutal Imagination, adapted from his National Book Award-finalist poetry cycle, Eady conjures this imaginary Black man as Mr. Zero, who appears in order to “to get things done” when white people need a scapegoat for the consequences of their own actions. As Smith spins her story into more and more elaborate designs, Mr. Zero begins to rebel against his appointed task, leading Smith, and us, slowly closer to the dark secret at the center of the play.&nbsp;Brutal Imagination&nbsp;implicates not just the small town of Union, South Carolina, but an entire American racial imaginary in which a white woman’s story, no matter how ludicrous, is always believed if it implicates a Black man.

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Paula Vogel’s How I Learned to Drive is widely recognized as a masterpiece of contemporary drama. It is published here for the first time as a stand-alone edition. Paula Vogel is the author of Indecent, The Baltimore Waltz, The Long Christmas Ride Home, Don Juan Comes Home from Iraq and A Civil War Christmas, among many other plays.
