After a brief introduction to the study of Africa, the early chapters of the book survey the essentials of African history; important historical narratives; and the region's languages, religions, and global connections. Political Behavior in Latin America

The book seeks to move forward debates on postsecularity as conceived by Habermas et.al. which recognise that, contrary to secular expectations, religion persists. The study is unique in exploring the irruptions (external breakthroughs) that unsettle secularisation and which give rise to postsecularisation. This shift has rendered sociology vulnerable to some unexpected theological considerations, some of which are explored in the study. Topics considered in the study, which make it accessible, include: dilemmas of naming; emotions and the visual; martyrdom and theodicy. Each of these has irruptive properties that force sociology to reconsider its theological debts. Postsecularity has become a fashionable term, but one which needs to be fleshed out and this study grasps a moment of opportunity to do so, which renders it original.

Sex, Gender, and Politics explores how to think about political behavior based on empirical evidence of sex differences in attitudes and behaviors within the context of gendered norms and institutions. Drawing upon advancements in fields such as social psychology, cognitive neuroscience, behavioral economics, and even behavioral genetics, Rebecca J. Hannagan uses a biosocial approach to think about sex, gender, and political behavior.

Increasingly research shows that women and men not only perceive people and situations quite differently, but that we might expect different political attitudes and behaviors from them as a result. Recent studies suggest gender-balanced group dynamics can impact decision making in ways that old models of politics and leadership do not capture. Previous models were based on notions of socialized gender roles, as well as notions about leadership being gendered masculine, but these notions are evolving. From both scholarly and practical standpoints, our thinking about sex, gender, and politics needs an update. Sex, Gender, and Politics explores how to think about political behavior based on empirical evidence of sex differences in attitudes and behaviors within the context of gendered norms and institutions. Although "women in politics" as a subfield of political science and a political agenda is important, this book shows that there are reasons beyond equality and representation to pay attention to sex and gender. Drawing upon advancements in fields such as social psychology, cognitive neuroscience, behavioral economics, and even behavioral genetics, Rebecca J. Hannagan uses a biosocial approach to think about sex, gender, and political behavior. The book also addresses the political problem that women do not serve in public office at the same rate as their male counterparts, arguing that the issue is not merely one of concern to women’s rights movements or a matter of equality, but one that leaves political deliberation and democratic politics sorely lacking based on current research on gender balance and group dynamics. This book takes categories typical of any course in political psychology and political behavior—as well as women and politics or gender politics—and reframes them, not only by focusing on sex differences, gender roles, and gendered institutions, but via a biosocial approach to attitudes and behaviors. This reframing is essential for courses on political behavior and gender and politics and presents an updated way of thinking about politics that should appeal to students and scholars alike.

However, it has caused serious local, regional and trans-boundary environmental problems. Governments in Asia have implemented a variety of environmental policies to address domestic environmental degradation. However, stringency, pace and enforcement vary by countries. Policies have swung back and forth, reflecting a countryâEUR(TM)s political, economic and social context, as well as effectiveness of the implemented policy instruments. Environmental Policy in Asia highlights the development of environmental policies throughout the region and the environmental challenges that policymakers face in a time rapid economic growth amid globalization. Akihisa Mori then goes onto assess how effective these policies are for managing local, national and trans-boundary environmental challenges and how the policies reflect a tradeoff between regional and global environmental challenges and the governments own priorities. Routledge Methodist Studies Series

This book examines two main themes which had national significance in eighteenth-century British Methodism. First, the interaction between the two distinct theological expressions of Methodism; Calvinist and Arminian. The 'parting of the ways' marks the first major split in Methodism as the differences of theological understanding changed into the demarcation of religious organisations. The core of the book will feature a series of case-studies which explore Calvinist and Arminian Methodists in a number of key locations, where competition and even religious take-over bids were used by John Wesley's movement to gain religious dominance. Secondly, the book explores the nature of John Wesley's leadership of his movement, and especially how the competition between the Calvinist and Arminian strands of Methodism made it necessary for Wesley to change the way he exercised his leadership and authority. This will be examined through Wesley's role as connexional leader and his relationships with individual preachers and society members. Hart also explores both the reasons his leadership changed over the period of the study and the impact these changes had in the local context. The book will explore how these changes were made necessary by the increasing size of his 'Connexion' and the attendant changes in the application of Wesleyan discipline especially on the itinerant preachers. Whilst much has been written about Wesleyanism, and more specifically about John Wesley as a religious leader, and there is now an increase of interest in George Whitefield and the Calvinist branch of Methodism. This book is unique in examining how the two affected each other at the local level. The book shows that, however united were the leaders of early Methodism even in their theological diversity, in promoting evangelical revival their unity was not strong enough to hold together the religious movements they founded.

Indigenous Peoples and the Capability Approach

There are very few sociology textbooks that attempt to provide a general introduction for students to modern Asia. Within the framework of the comparative sociology of Asian societies, this volume explores key issues in culture and social structure. In cultural terms, it considers religion, nationalism and popular culture. With regard to social structure, there is an emphasis on gender, the family, social class and ethnicity. This comparative study also examines major aspects of social change relating to contemporary globalization.

This textbook provides an ambitious overview of Asia from the perspective of the comparative sociology of culture and social structure. Starting with the history of colonialism and empire, the study examines major dimensions of modern social change from population and migration, the growth of nationalism and communism, and the development of religions, both popular and official. This sociological approach considers the major structural dimensions of Asian societies in terms of gender, sexuality and the family, social class, ethnicity and inequality, and democracy and citizenship. The empirical examples are taken from north and east Asia (China, Vietnam,South Korea and Japan) and from Southeast Asia (Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia). There are passing references to South Asia, Thailand and the Philippines.Its coherence is provided by a macro-sociological perspective (a modern interpretation of the sociology of Max Weber).
