This book examines two main themes which had national significance in eighteenth-century British Methodism. First, the interaction between the two distinct theological expressions of Methodism; Calvinist and Arminian. The 'parting of the ways' marks the first major split in Methodism as the differences of theological understanding changed into the demarcation of religious organisations. The core of the book will feature a series of case-studies which explore Calvinist and Arminian Methodists in a number of key locations, where competition and even religious take-over bids were used by John Wesley's movement to gain religious dominance. Secondly, the book explores the nature of John Wesley's leadership of his movement, and especially how the competition between the Calvinist and Arminian strands of Methodism made it necessary for Wesley to change the way he exercised his leadership and authority. This will be examined through Wesley's role as connexional leader and his relationships with individual preachers and society members. Hart also explores both the reasons his leadership changed over the period of the study and the impact these changes had in the local context. The book will explore how these changes were made necessary by the increasing size of his 'Connexion' and the attendant changes in the application of Wesleyan discipline especially on the itinerant preachers. Whilst much has been written about Wesleyanism, and more specifically about John Wesley as a religious leader, and there is now an increase of interest in George Whitefield and the Calvinist branch of Methodism. This book is unique in examining how the two affected each other at the local level. The book shows that, however united were the leaders of early Methodism even in their theological diversity, in promoting evangelical revival their unity was not strong enough to hold together the religious movements they founded.

In response to the rise of administrative rationality, this book draws on history, social anthropology and political theology, to examine the current crisis of faith in the legal and political constitutional imagination. Through a close reading of developments in crisis-stricken Greece and beyond, Marinos Diamantides maintains that the totalizing idea of an absolute but relational power of self-constitution applicable everywhere is the result, not of discarding but, attributing to man, the power of God. Forging a new vocabulary and new instruments by which to understand and respond to various crises in the contemporary state form, this book will be of enormous interest to scholars, students and others with an interest in current legal and political theory.

While the debt of law to more fundamental social and political phenomena has been established, the link between contemporary thinking of society, politics and law to pre-modern philosophical and religious metaphysics was and is still denied both by formalists and anti-formalist realists promoting the rise of social sciences in law. This book contests the premises of such secular optimism, arguing that modern constitutionality still involves legal and political values, rights entitlements and social formations that reflect the particular metaphysical postulates of a bygone era. Even as the constitution of world society is widely described as the result of fragmented and impersonal processes, the occidental fantasy of a sovereign power remains operative. Theological reflection lies at the heart of practical theology. There is an increasingly robust collection of literature focusing on it. However, little attention has been given to what reflection is or what it looks like when practised 'theologically'. This gap may account for some of the ongoing uncertainty on the part of practitioners of every sort: those engaged in ministry, teachers and students of practical theology, and 'every day' Christians aspiring to make meaning of their experience in a way that is faithful to the Christian tradition. This book provides an exploration of theological reflection from a foundation of adult education in general and experiential learning theory in particular. Reflection as a way of making meaning from experience is integral to experiential learning theory and the book argues that reflection and learning have a symbiotic relationship. Reflection should therefore be understood and its processes examined from this perspective. The early chapters provide the important educational foundations. Literature on theological reflection is then scrutinised through this lens, before the findings of an empirical study are presented which reveal how individuals went about reflecting theologically in an educational context. The analysis of both theory and empirical data allows a range of pointers to emerge about what theological reflection looks like in practice and what features influence the procedures adopted. Two penultimate chapters are provided by academic practitioners who respond to the overall discussion by reflecting on the implications for their practice. The final chapter draws the threads together and indicates how the volume has contributed to practical theology's understanding of theological reflection in general.
