Invisible Digital helps us makes sense of something we cannot see by presenting an innovative approach to digital images and digital culture. At its heart is a novel method for exploring software used in the creation of moving images as markers of converging cultural, organizational and technological influences. The three main case studies of Invisible Digital are the animated feature Moana (2016) and the computer games No Man’s Sky (2016) and Everything (2017). All three were created using procedural techniques: simulation software for Moana, and procedural content generation for No Man’s Sky and Everything. Production culture disclosures associated with procedural techniques often emphasize the influences of automated systems and their algorithms, making them ideal for a study that interrogates digital processes. 

The approach of Invisible Digital is informed by relational theories and the concept of entanglement based on materialist perspectives, combined with insights from work that more explicitly interrogates algorithms and algorithmic culture. Aylish Wood employs the notion of assemblages to introduce the concept of material-cultural narratives. Using this conceptual framework, she draws out material-cultural narratives for each case study to demonstrate what they reveal about software and digital culture. These analyses of software provide a widely applicable method through which moving image studies can contribute more fully to the wider and growing debates about algorithmic culture.

Based on a series of interviews conducted with researchers within and outside of academia, it aims to capture the personal challenges, ethical dilemmas, practical obstacles, positive rewards and (potential or actual) harmful effects of undertaking critical research concerned with state punishment. By definition, critical research is a dynamic and political process which recognizes the broad structural contexts within which human action takes place. Over the past few years an increasing number of museums have experimented with social media to demonstrate that they are listening and engaging in the world outside. While a number of new publications describe the rise of social media as a potential panacea for dwindling audiences, this book is unique in its recognition that participation has not, for the most part, affected the majority of museum practices. Using a number of global examples to describe and map the ways in which social media has been explored within communication programs, authors Russo and Kelly offer a window into the challenges which face future communication strategies and curatorial practices within museums. In this way new essential lessons for museum professionals, museum studies students, and potential collaborators are made accessible.

While a number of new publications describe the rise of social media as a potential panacea for dwindling audiences, this book is unique in its recognition that participation has not, for the most part, affected the majority of museum practices. Participation programs have certainly been introduced to a number of museums and as this book will show, some have been tremendously successful. Yet, for the most part, participation has been limited and the bulk of engagement has tended to be around new forms of publication from within rather than discussions with diverse audiences. Based on research conducted with international museums over the past 6 years, this book explores three key areas: engagement, participation, and co-creation as the keystones for understanding the value of the "social" museum. Using a number of global examples to describe and map the ways in which social media has been explored within communication programs, authors Russo and Kelly offer a window into the challenges which face future communication strategies and curatorial practices within museums. This book develops models for new partnerships, based on critical analysis of both the impact of social media and evaluations of some of the most successful examples in the sector to date.
