Durch seine langjährige Zusammenarbeit mit der Industrie und seine Lehrtätigkeit ist de3m Autor die Problematik der Umsetzung von erworbenem, theoretischem, Wissen in die praktische Arbeit des Ingenieurs wohlbekannt. Das Buch soll zunächst helfen, die sich dabei ergebenden Schwierigkeiten zu überbrücken. Von den zum Teil sehr scharfsinnigen Methoden, welche die praktische Mathematik bereitgestellt hat, sind viele durch den Rechnereinsatz aus dem Blickpunkt des Ingenieurs verschwunden - und oft auch die damit verbundenen, vorteilhaften Lösungskonzepte. Bewährte und heute noch leistungsstarke Methoden werden jetzt unter Rechnereinsatz neu eingeführt. Aktuelle Anwendungen hierzu werden angegeben. Weiterhin wirdl an Beispielen aus der Numerischen Mathematik gezeigt, wie man heute aktuelle Lösungskonzepte so weiterentwickeln kann, dass diese auf wesentlich breitere Anwendungsfelder erfolgreich wirken. Manche dieser Weiterentwicklungen wurden vom Autor selbst entwickelt und können anhand von Anwendungsbeispielen demonstriert werden. Schließlich verlangt der Einsatz von numerischen Methoden und auch die Simulation von technischen Systemen eine Kenntnis des jeweiligen mathematischen Modells das diese Systeme beschreibt. Das Problem der mathematischen Modellbildung ist ein übergeordneter Aspekt für alle Kapitel des geplanten Buches sein.
