The story of recorded sound - the technological developments, the people that made them happen and the impact they had on society - from the earliest inventions via the phonograph to LPs, EPs and the recent resurgence of vinyl.

While Thomas Edison's phonograph, the first device that could both record and reproduce sound, represented an important turning point in the story of recorded sound, it was really only the tip of the iceberg, and came after decades of invention, tinkering and experiment. An Introduction to Music Technology

How do we study the sonic nature of war when very few of these sounds remain? World War One has left little sonic trace other than the popular music of the time. The sounds of World War One extended beyond sounds of entertainment and into the killing fields of the Western Front, the oceans of the world, and for the first time into the skies with the development of aviation. But beyond this, they entered into peoples homes, their streets, and indeed their thoughts, emotions, and feelings. Book-length studies exist on the sounds of many other recent major wars, but there is a lack of sonic coverage of World War One. Here, Michael Bull investigates the sounds of war as experienced by those who participated in it by drawing upon a wide range of written testament of the time. These written "voices" are subjective, living memories expressed as fragmentary, often unreliable testimony but provide us with the only living sonic testimony of the time. The book filters these accounts through the technologies of "total war," from the trench whistle to the tank, from the newly developed airplane to the submarine. It asks: how did the wartime population experience these sounds and what were the physical and cognitive consequences of the implementation and use of these often invasive technologies of destruction, instruction and sometimes protection? In doing so, the the book re-evaluates just how we should understand the sounds of World War One and the sounds of war more generally.

Examining French ideological novels, Louise Lyle charts the development of French hostility towards social Darwinism during the fin de siècle. Lyle argues that the antagonism of a wide range of authors from diverse literary schools was a consequence of and a response to historically specific insecurities relative to the state of the French nation. Grounded in the cultural history of biology, Lyle's study is an important contribution to literature and the history of science.

Examining French ideological novels, Louise Lyle charts the development and motivation of French hostility towards social Darwinism during the fin de siècle. Lyle argues that the antagonism of authors from diverse literary schools was a consequence of and a response to historically specific insecurities relative to the state of the French nation. She analyzes works by Emile Zola, foremost among the literary naturalists and an exponent of 'scientific republicanism'; right-wing reactionaries Maurice Barrès and Paul Bourget; anarchist sympathiser Octave Mirbeau; pro-natalists and commentators on women's issues, Colette Yver and Marcel Prévost; and anti-Anglo-Saxonists, including Gustave Le Rouge, le Capitaine Danrit, and J.-H. Rosny. Lyle also investigates the legacy of the incorporation of social Darwinism by these authors in the work of post-World War II writers Vercors and Romain Gary and in contemporary fiction by Michel Houellebecq and Maurice Dantec. Grounded in the cultural history of biology, particularly in France, Lyle's study is an important contribution to literature and the history of science.

Social Darwinism in the French Ideological Novel

Joss Marsh's stirring book traces the international phenomenon that is cinema's Dickens obsession, from its origins in Dickens's celebrity, through Dickens impact on the pioneers, first masters, and later innovators of the cinema and his enmeshment in the complex of technologies and cultural formations that made up the world of late-Victorian fantasy - from the photograph to the magic lantern, from celebrity to time travel.

As Joss Marsh observes in her stirring book on Dickens and cinema, Dickens was the first mass-mediated photographic celebrity of the modern era, more intimately "familiar" than any person in Britain besides the royal family. Suggesting Dickens's celebrity, as much as his work, contributed to the international phenomenon that is cinema's Dickens obsession, Marsh begins with  J. J. E. Mayall's famous celebrity portraits to trace Dickens's impact on the pioneers, first masters, and later innovators of the cinema. At the same time, Marsh uncovers a larger issue: to understand Dickens's place in cinema is to understand his enmeshment in the whole complex of technologies and cultural formations that made up the world of late-Victorian fantasy-from the photograph to the magic lantern, from celebrity to time travel.  Each of the six chapters unfolds a century-long cultural story that maps the Dickensian points of inspiration in the history of cinema. Marsh's cinematic geography of Dickensland transports the reader from Dickens's experiences with the early-Victorian portraitist's camera to Sunset Boulevard, Billy Wilder's remake of Great Expectations as a satire on the vampiric celebrity "celluloid self"; from actor-manager Martin-Harvey's 1899 manufacture of the "cast-iron" Victorian stage play to Dirk Bogarde's 1958 inheritance of the sacrificial gay role of Sydney Carton; from Charley Dickens Jnr.'s attempt to cash in on his father's knowledge of London to the history of production design as a medium of historical tourism and virtual experience; from Dickens's "impersonation" of Fagin, anti-Semitic and inherently theatrical, to the transformations of "the Jew" by Chaplin and David Lean and his musical apotheosis as magician and Pied Piper; from Dickens's 1868 return, in his last public reading, to the murder of Nancy to the contemporary slasher movie; and finally from the time travel enabled by the magic lantern's "dissolving views" through the role of Dickens's lantern-inspired Christmas tales of the 1840s in the lantern's development of pre-cinematic visual storytelling. The use of acoustic technology is not new. The first acoustic systems for aircraft and submarine detection were built during World War I. Over the last few years and with the advance of computing, memory storage efficiency, and programming, signal processing techniques have advanced significantly. As a result, acoustic capabilities have become more attractive in maritime and border security. They can now be applied to detect targets of interest at longer distances at low false alarm rates, better classification, and tracking. This book describes the principles of acoustic waves, signal processing techniques, and current and future applications of acoustic technology for port and border protection.
