Corpus and Discourse

Combining corpus linguistics, critical discourse analysis, and a discourse analysis of narratives, this book considers one aspect of the Brexit process: the language that journalists, politicians and individuals used to write and talk about what it means to be British and European around the time of Brexit. It reveals a trajectory towards a discourse of national division in Brexit Britain in three datasets: pro-Brexit newspaper articles, UK Government documents, and interviews with individual citizens. Demonstrating the important role that (supra-)national identity discourses played in discussions about Brexit, the book traces a shift towards a representation of Brexit Britain as divided and in decline at a time when the construction of a collective identity is likely to be paramount. The emerging representation is a direct contradiction of the great global trading nation narrative that the Vote Leave campaigners - and later the UK Government - promised, questioning the discursive success of the Global Britain project. Constructing Brexit Britain demonstrates that the transition from pre- to post-Brexit Britain was a crucial period of destabilisation for institutional and lay national identity narratives. It also illustrates that the coming years are likely to be just as important, as the UK forges its post-Brexit place in the world amid declining levels of trust in politicians, calls for a second Scottish membership referendum, the COVID-19 pandemic, and a cost of living crisis.

There has been an increasing movement to place results at the heart of the agenda for social investments and development. Though development has a compelling value proposition a year of life can often be saved for a few hundred dollars there is skepticism to its ability to measure and manage programs for results. It is this skepticism which is at the heart of debates on the future of development. Managing Development for Results describes the results agenda in development, measurement and management approaches, and challenges on the ground. It is an easily accessible book which provides a comprehensive view on the innovative approach used to demonstrate compelling development results. The first section of the book covers the history and key components of the results agenda. The second section assesses how this is put into practice with innovative examples from global initiatives, foundations, civil society, private sector and country case studies. Finally, the book assesses the future role of the results-based agenda for a wide variety of development actors. It argues that results provide a "common currency" to coordinate and focus increasingly diverse partners on the core value of development, and communicate this to a wider audience. How results are built into development programs and the future development agenda will be illustrated as well. This book aims to target a wide audience in development, practitioners internationally and locally, management, business and philanthropy and those interested in international relations. It would also aim to appeal to a general audience interested in the future of development and whether it can achieve compelling results.

This book explores central issues of religion in an age of globalization, questioning how religion speaks to us in contemporary society, and how representations of religion impact in popular culture. Focusing on Japanese popular culture, MacWilliams examines Japanese comic books in particular: Japanese manga or 'comic books' often explicitly deal with religion, and commercially published manga account for over 40% of total number of books and magazines published in Japan. The magic of manga lies in their potential "to dramatise and exaggerate information and simplify a complex reality", and just like the religious iconography of an earlier age, modern manga offer a powerful visual theology of sacred reality for their audience. What 'imagined selves and worlds' do manga construct? What are some of the important visual theologies that they can convey? These are some of the questions explored in this book. Historians of religion have largely ignored popular culture as a medium of religious experience and expression; yet by neglecting popular genres, such as Japanese manga, they ignore one of the principal ways people day wrestle with contemporary moral and spiritual issues. This book redresses this neglected area, raising profound religious and moral issues that are immediately relevant for those exploring Japanese religion, media and cultural studies, and anyone trying to imagine the sacred today.

This book examines the convergences, divergences and reciprocal lessons that the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) share with one another in developing the principles of private international law. The chapters provide a thematic understanding of the cornerstones of private international law in each of the BRICS countries: namely, (1) the procedure to initiate claims in civil and commercial matters, (2) the law that would govern such matters in litigation and arbitration, as well as (3) the mechanism to recognise and enforce foreign judgments and arbitral awards. Written by leading private international law scholars and practitioners, the chapters draw on domestic legislation and its interpretation through cases decided by the courts in each of these emerging economies, and explicitly cover the rules applicable in contractual and non-contractual concerns and issues of choice of court agreements. Issues around marriage, divorce, matrimonial property, succession and surrogacy are also addressed, considering the implication of such aspects through the increased movement of persons. The book is a useful comparative resource for the governments of the BRICS countries, legislators, traders, academics, researchers and students looking for an in-depth discussion of the reciprocal lessons that these countries may have to offer one another on these issues.
