The questions posed by disability studies scholarship are increasingly of interest to medieval studies scholars and there have been a wealth of books published on the intersection of these two fields of research over the past two decades. More recently, medieval scholars have developed a framework for considering more specifically medieval ways of thinking about disability, analyzing the medieval conception of the different or 'othered' body and thinking through 'medieval things': such as the responses to injury and resulting impairment in contemporary law, literature, and art; the impaired body as a site for miraculous transformation; the presence of physical and mental difference in different cultural modes than exist in the modern world; and the role of theosophical thought in characterizing difference. This is the first volume to survey this field as a whole, bringing together the most notable scholars in the field alongside up-and-coming academics, to analyse recent studies and to suggest directions for future research. Chapters are organized into four categories that treat broadly the current questions of the field as they apply to each contributor's area of expertise: Articulations of Difference; Critical Perspectives; Traditions of Medieval Thought; and Disability and Material Cultures. Each category is introduced by a leading figure in the field, and the volume is concluded with an Afterword.

Based on extensive ethnographic research observing in detail the reception of a particular Japanese cultural product, the book shows how, even when the product has been modified to anticipate a different reception in each of the three places, even then the reception is different. The book goes onto discuss more generally the nature of Japanese popular culture and its reception in the three places, showing how history and continuing national antagonism influence attitudes in China, how Hong Kong's special "in between" status affects the reception there, and how in Taiwan the memory of Japanese colonialism is being re-formed in order to reinforce Taiwan's cultural distinctiveness.

The Mongol conquests of China in the thirteenth century have typically been seen as a disaster for the subject Chinese peoples, placing them under the yoke of an invader insensitive to Chinese cultural values, distrustful of Chinese influences and inept in government. This book assesses the Mongol achievements in China and re-considers their significance, arguing that the Mongols did not merely cause harm but also brought many benefits, not least bringing together nearly the whole of what was later referred to as ‘China’ and devising a system of government that, more or less successfully, held it together. It provides an account of the turbulent period immediately preceding the Mongol conquest of China, presenting evidence that strongly suggests the first use of gunpowder weapons in China. It goes on to examine the manner in which China was brought under Mongol rule, with particular focus on some of the major campaigns including the submission of the Uighur, the conquest of the Jin and Song empires, the campaigns in Dali, Yunnan and Korea, and the occupation of Tibet. Investigates the impact of Mongol rule, including the important lessons learned from ruling northern China and the later dynasties established by great Mongol rulers such as Khubilai Khan. Finally, it examines the reasons behind the collapse of the Mongol empire in China and the legacy left by Mongol rule.
