Disasters, here defined as the complex interaction between natural hazards and specific human vulnerabilities, have frequently left a mark on human history. Cataclysms have toppled dynasties, fueled massacres, and shaped the culture of societies frequently affected by natural hazards. This volume fosters understanding of such events by considering both social science theory and the natural science concepts relevant to disaster studies. In addition, the text makes heavy use of an emerging psychological theory relevant to disaster studies: the behavioral immune system, which helps to explain why xenophobic behavior and even violence often erupt in the aftermath of disasters. Chapters consider specific examples of disasters: earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, climate change (including modern anthropogenic climate change or global warming), and tropical cyclones.This book is an accessible resource, ideal for undergraduates and instructors in world history, environmental history, and disaster studies courses.

This book responds to moves to rematerialize the social sciences, to attend to the stuff of daily life, but challenges the social sciences to think beyond objects as stable things. It argues that objects are better seen as things coming apart, as en route to becoming something else, some stuff else, somewhere else. It locates these arguments in economies of demolition, disposal and reincarnation, focusing on object death, materials recovery and re-fabrication, and the sequestration and unleashing of materials classified as wastes.

It argues that objects are better seen as things coming apart, as en route to becoming something else, some stuff else, somewhere else. It locates these arguments in economies of demolition, disposal and reincarnation, focusing on object death, materials recovery and re-fabrication, and the sequestration and unleashing of materials classified as wastes. It uses as its exemplar case the classic immutable mobile, the ship – one of the most durable and complex of fabricated objects. It illustrates these arguments through global ethnography conducted in various settings around the world, including South Asia and the EU.

This book sheds new light on the complex relationship between criminal liability, sexuality and public health in the era of Aids. It analyses, in particular, the role of public health arguments, and the language of 'sexual rights', in legal struggles aimed at decriminalising certain forms of 'risky' sexual conduct. Addressing gay sex, paid sex, and sex carried out by people living with HIV and Aids, the book demonstrates how public health experts are increasingly arguing that the criminal laws used to regulate these areas of behaviour should be abandoned in order to reduce the stigma and discrimination experienced by the 'risky' sexual populations that they target.
