David Hume reshaped, redirected, and re-energised the English essay. His sceptical, rational, self-questioning persona created what amounted to a new intellectual arena, in which it was possible to think afresh about the world and the self. When he famously wrote that 'the life of man is of no greater importance to the universe than that of an oyster', something had changed. David Womersley has spent a lifetime studying the literature of the eighteenth century. Claude Lefort (geboren 1924) gilt als einer der bedeutendsten politischen Philosophen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Das Wort »Freiheit«, schrieb er noch 1983, sei für lange Zeit aus der Wissenschaft in die Umgangssprache verbannt gewesen - bescheidener kann man mit der eigenen Lebensleistung kaum umgehen. Der Schüler Merleau-Pontys war zunächst Marxist, wandte sich aber in den späten vierziger Jahren vom orthodoxen Parteikommunismus ab. Gemeinsam mit Carlos Castoriadis gründete er 1949 die Zeitschrift Socialisme ou barbarie, in der nach neuen Wegen gesucht wurde, Sozialismus und Freiheit zu vereinbaren. Daraus entwickelte Lefort, der auch für Sartres Temps modernes schrieb und unter anderem an der Sorbonne und der EHESS lehrte, seine Theorie des Totalitarismus, der Demokratie und der Menschenrechte. Der vorliegende Band versammelt die wichtigsten Aufsätze Leforts aus den Jahren 1945 bis 2005. Gerade in Zeiten, in denen das neoliberale Modell nicht länger als alternativlos erscheint, lohnt es, diesen großen Denker (neu) zu entdecken.

How the modern world has understood the ancient Greeks and why they matter todayThe study of ancient Greek history has been central to the western conception of history since the Renaissance. The Muse of History traces the shifting patterns of this preoccupation in the last three centuries, in which each generation has reinterpreted the Greeks in the light of their contemporary world, through times of revolution, conflicting ideologies and warfare. It aims to offer a new history of Greek historiography from the Enlightenment to the present, and to acknowledge the continuing spiritual importance of the ancient Greeks for European culture in the twentieth century under totalitarian persecutions. An internationally celebrated poet and critic brings Jagadish Chandra Bose’s revolutionary writings on plant sentience and communication to English readers for the first time &nbsp; Jagadish Chandra Bose (1858–1937) was a Bengali scientist and polymath who developed a theory of plant communication more than a century before Western scientists began to explore such ideas. Bose suggested that plants had their own vocabulary, an “unvoiced life” that he recorded as a “script” with a crescograph and other devices he invented to measure how plants respond to each other and their environments. &nbsp; Inviting readers into the “resounding silence of the green plant kingdom,” he described an underlying unity beneath the multiplicity of phenomena, and a world in which “endless music is sung everywhere.” Dismissed as idiosyncratic and unscientific when he was alive, Bose provocatively challenged the hierarchy of living beings, which relegated plants to the bottom, and created a mesmerizing body of work on nonhuman intelligence whose originality and significance we at last are able to appreciate today. &nbsp; Through her lyrical translations and selections from Bose’s essay collection Abyakta (The Unsaid; 1922), Sumana Roy reveals the revolutionary character of his mind, as poetic and philosophical as it was scientific.
