India is familiar ground for Granta, which has devoted two classic issues to the country. The last 'India' issue was published on the cusp of the Modi era, which has now lasted more than a decade. 173 will feature fiction and poetry in translation from regional languages including Tamil, Kannada, Bengali, Marathi and Malayalam. Feature articles will be devoted to the Indian space program; the simmering conflict in Nagaland; a report from the BJP stronghold in Houston; a letter from Kerala; as well as meditations on the accelerating divisions in the country and an assessment of the political opposition. Contributors will be drawn from across the country, with a focus on regional authors as opposed to the elite enclaves of Delhi and Mumbai and Kolkata, which - along with the diaspora - have dominated the cultural scene since the country's founding.
