What role do subcultures play in the radicalisation of Islamist, right-wing and left-wing groups? How are the norms of subcultures adopted by radicalised individuals and reflected in their lifestyle, identity and choices? Violent radicalisation is often portrayed as a deviant behaviour resulting from social and political dissociation. At the same time Islamist, right-wing and left-wing terrorist groups have all found sections of the population to sympathise with their aims and provide them with moral and logistical support. Through comprehensive systematic research, rigorous analysis of the empirical data and a range of interviews with active and former radicals Daniela Pisoiu construct a theoretical framework to explain the transition to radicalisation and political violence in Germany. Her conclusions provide us with a wider understanding of the role of subcultures in violent radicalisation and demonstrates that, far from a marginal and abnormal phenomenon, this radicalisation is a matter of traceable long term and holistic socialisation.

Prompting many of these attacks have been incidents or events - typically interpreted as 'controversies' - that have involved or centred on issues relating to Muslims or Islam. Having ramifications in the social, cultural or political spaces, many have seen these controversies as accentuating the 'problem' of Muslims and Islam. Focusing on a number of these 'crises' and 'controversies', this book seeks to to interrogate the theories of Islamophobia through the lens of a series of different 'crises and controversies' that have involved - or have been perceived as involving - Muslims or Islam. This book critically engages these 'crises and controversies' through the framework of the definitions, theories and concepts explored in the author's earlier book Islamophobia? (Ashgate, 2010). Allen's latest boo sets out to: better understand where, how and why the responses of both the right, left and centre of the European political spectrum are seemingly converging in views and attitudes towards Muslims and Islam; contribute additional knowledge to the still relatively under-researched yet extremely timely phenomenon of Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hatred; and consider how this links to and affects attitudes and expressions manifested in the public and social spaces. There is no such thing as a European foreign, security or defence policy, in the sense of a coordinated ensemble of national, EU and NATO initiatives, only European foreign, security and defence policies, pursued by different actors, sometimes in coordination, sometimes alongside each other, sometimes in competition. National sovereignty prevails. Decisions are taken in the capitals and acting through the EU or NATO are just two options in addition to, and no more important than, the national option. The book argues that the Palestinian response to the challenge of promoting their cause is to extend their repertoire of public relations communication tactics. It explores the discursive strategies employed by Palestinian communication strategists, across the range of political allegiances, via public relations techniques to advance the cause of statehood. These tactics have emerged not only as the result of planned strategy but also through improvisation and informal responses to outside pressures.

The book argues that the Palestinian response to the challenge of promoting their cause is to extend their repertoire of public relations communication tactics. It explores the discursive strategies employed by Palestinian communication strategists, across the range of political allegiances, via public relations techniques to advance the cause of statehood. It also explores how the growing number of professional communicators use strategic communication to position key ‘national’ issues. These tactics have emerged not only as the result of planned strategy but also through improvisation and informal responses to outside pressures. Whether this increasing coherence and confidence arises from the growing availability of professional communication planning expertise, or the decreasing cost barriers associated with digital media, the outcome has been greater international political recognition for Palestine. By illustrating this effectiveness and symbolic coherence in the face of both poor internal mass media structures and political constraints, the Palestinian example may offer insights for other aspiring national movements and for public diplomacy.

Drawing upon advancements in fields such as social psychology, cognitive neuroscience, behavioral economics, and even behavioral genetics, Rebecca J. Hannagan uses a biosocial approach to think about sex, gender, and political behavior.

Increasingly research shows that women and men not only perceive people and situations quite differently, but that we might expect different political attitudes and behaviors from them as a result. Recent studies suggest gender-balanced group dynamics can impact decision making in ways that old models of politics and leadership do not capture. Previous models were based on notions of socialized gender roles, as well as notions about leadership being gendered masculine, but these notions are evolving. From both scholarly and practical standpoints, our thinking about sex, gender, and politics needs an update. Sex, Gender, and Politics explores how to think about political behavior based on empirical evidence of sex differences in attitudes and behaviors within the context of gendered norms and institutions. Although "women in politics" as a subfield of political science and a political agenda is important, this book shows that there are reasons beyond equality and representation to pay attention to sex and gender. Drawing upon advancements in fields such as social psychology, cognitive neuroscience, behavioral economics, and even behavioral genetics, Rebecca J. Hannagan uses a biosocial approach to think about sex, gender, and political behavior. The book also addresses the political problem that women do not serve in public office at the same rate as their male counterparts, arguing that the issue is not merely one of concern to women’s rights movements or a matter of equality, but one that leaves political deliberation and democratic politics sorely lacking based on current research on gender balance and group dynamics. This book takes categories typical of any course in political psychology and political behavior—as well as women and politics or gender politics—and reframes them, not only by focusing on sex differences, gender roles, and gendered institutions, but via a biosocial approach to attitudes and behaviors. This reframing is essential for courses on political behavior and gender and politics and presents an updated way of thinking about politics that should appeal to students and scholars alike.
