Understanding Religion and Society aims to help undergraduate students understand the roles that religion plays within social life, and how these roles influence the economic, political, and socio-cultural aspects of different societies. Scott-Jones reviews a range of key issues and debates within the social science study of religion, and explores key global religious trends. The book has a range of pedagogic features, including short case studies, reflective questions and activities, suggested readings, media and online resources.

Understanding Religion and Society: Identity, Meaning and Knowledge is aimed at undergraduate students studying religion within a social science context. Its central focus is on the roles that religion plays within social life and how these roles influence the economic, political, and socio-cultural aspects of different societies. Identity, meaning and knowledge provision are identified as underpinning all of religion’s other socio-cultural functions. The book uses these three elements as central themes – a means to explore the ways in which religion operates within different societies. The book will review a range of key issues and debates within the social science study of religion, including the secularization thesis. It will review key global religious trends, such as the growth of religious fundamentalism, new religious movements, and New Age believing. The book will have a range of pedagogic features, including, short ‘boxed’ case studies, reflective questions and activities, suggested readings, media and online resources.

This book is the first major study of the constellation of evangelists, mission halls, tent revivals, children's clubs, Bible institutes, musicians, advertising strategies, publishing enterprises, and philanthropic activity that constituted a vibrant substratum of British Evangelical Christianity between the mid-nineteenth and mid-twentieth centuries. This populist Protestant subculture has been well-charted in North America but virtually ignored in Britain. This lacuna is part due to a common assumption that secularization? corroded traditional religious communities during this era. By contrast, this book argues that this panoply of pan-denominational affinities and endeavours in fact represented an adaptation of the British Evangelical Protestant tradition to the age of mass democracy. In exploring the beliefs, worship and spirituality, gender roles, mission networks, revival events, material culture, and social protocols and taboos of popular Evangelicalism, the book presents a religious movement well-attuned to an age of popular politics, metropolitan culture, demotic advertising, and mass entertainment.

Sex, Gender, and Politics explores how to think about political behavior based on empirical evidence of sex differences in attitudes and behaviors within the context of gendered norms and institutions. Drawing upon advancements in fields such as social psychology, cognitive neuroscience, behavioral economics, and even behavioral genetics, Rebecca J. Hannagan uses a biosocial approach to think about sex, gender, and political behavior.

Increasingly research shows that women and men not only perceive people and situations quite differently, but that we might expect different political attitudes and behaviors from them as a result. Recent studies suggest gender-balanced group dynamics can impact decision making in ways that old models of politics and leadership do not capture. Previous models were based on notions of socialized gender roles, as well as notions about leadership being gendered masculine, but these notions are evolving. From both scholarly and practical standpoints, our thinking about sex, gender, and politics needs an update. Sex, Gender, and Politics explores how to think about political behavior based on empirical evidence of sex differences in attitudes and behaviors within the context of gendered norms and institutions. Although "women in politics" as a subfield of political science and a political agenda is important, this book shows that there are reasons beyond equality and representation to pay attention to sex and gender. Drawing upon advancements in fields such as social psychology, cognitive neuroscience, behavioral economics, and even behavioral genetics, Rebecca J. Hannagan uses a biosocial approach to think about sex, gender, and political behavior. The book also addresses the political problem that women do not serve in public office at the same rate as their male counterparts, arguing that the issue is not merely one of concern to women’s rights movements or a matter of equality, but one that leaves political deliberation and democratic politics sorely lacking based on current research on gender balance and group dynamics. This book takes categories typical of any course in political psychology and political behavior—as well as women and politics or gender politics—and reframes them, not only by focusing on sex differences, gender roles, and gendered institutions, but via a biosocial approach to attitudes and behaviors. This reframing is essential for courses on political behavior and gender and politics and presents an updated way of thinking about politics that should appeal to students and scholars alike.
