Le hasard entre pour une part notable dans toutes les choses humaines. En arrivant à Paris, je fus loin de penser à écrire un livre tel que celui-ci. Plus spécialement disposé, par ma profession d'avocat et mes études ordinaires, à m'occuper des questions relatives aux sciences morales et politiques, je n'avais aucunement l'idée de diriger mon attention vers une sphère où l'on pourrait me considérer comme un profane.La plupart de mes amis croyaient même que j'aurais profité de mon séjour dans la grande capitale pour suivre les cours de la Faculté de droit, afin d'obtenir les diplômes de la licence et du doctorat. Ce serait certainement un résultat bien digne de mon ambition, n'étaient les exigences de la scolarité et mes devoirs de famille.
