What does it mean to speak of humans as the image of God when apophatic theology speaks of an infinite God who transcends naming, comprehension, and worldly appearance? Bringing Church Father, Gregory of Nyssa into dialogue with the phenomenologies of Michel Henry, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, and Jean-Louis Chretien, Thomas Breedlove answers this question and explores the importance of embodiment to the doctrine of imago Dei. Divided into three parts, this book investigates humans' relation to the divine through three successive approaches. The first, in conversation with Merleau-Ponty, analyses the existential and phenomenological aspects of fleshly finitude as the paradigmatic site of the creature's difference from God. The second takes up Henry's philosophy of life alongside Gregory's metaphysics of participation to offer an account of creaturely life in its likeness or identity to divine life. The third, though conversation with Chrétien, examines the christological aspects of Gregory's anthropology in order to find the dynamic synthesis of likeness and difference that determines the nature of human beings as, in some way, reflecting God. In blending 4th century theology with 20th century phenomenology, Breedlove not only showcases the alternative perspectives they can offer each other, but further presents a novel theological anthropology. He argues that imago Dei is not merely one aspect of human identity, but rather precisely what constitutes 'human creatureliness', as is revealed in the dynamism and groundlessness of the flesh.

Bringing together Michel Foucault's aesthetics of existence and Richard Shusterman's somaesthetics, this volume provides a critical comparison of two of the most influential philosophical theories of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Introduced by a comprehensive overview of both concepts by editors Stefano Marino and Valentina Antoniol, the ensuing chapters interrogate the affinities and variances between Foucault's and Shusterman's philosophies. Building on the interdisciplinary character of somaesthetics and aesthetics of existence, international scholars explore these ideas through a wide range of topics ranging from care of the self and of the social self to the ethical and political challenges posed by themes as white ignorance, construction of resistances, and production of subjectivities. How a lifelong engagement with experimental art informed the brilliant Czech-Brazilian philosopher Vilém Flusser’s early vision of a world dominated by glowing screens. Predicting the importance of technology and images in the twenty-first century as early as the 1970s, Vilém Flusser warned, “the basic structure of our thinking is about to experience a mutation.” The bewitching images and screens that surround us could lead toward a centrally programmed, totalitarian society—or another, better one characterized by dialogue and collaboration among humans and new forms of intelligence. In this book on the idiosyncratic and prescient Czech-Brazilian philosopher, art historian and critic Martha Schwendener explores the profound effect of art on Flusser’s thought. Pushing against the association of Islamic philosophy with a temporal and geographical 'elsewhere', this work makes the case for a Ricoeurian hermeneutics of appropriation that revitalises Avicenna's thinking for the philosophy of today. Selami Varlik develops a precise approach to the appropriation of Avicenna, exploring the tension between being and non-being inherent in the notion of creation as crucial both to Ricoeur's hermeneutics and to the duality between essence and existence in Avicenna. Although he pays careful attention to their theological differences, Varlik identifies paths of convergence between Avicenna and Ricoeur on the levels of both form and content. In relation to form, he identifies a common language based on a shared concern with putting belief in tension with rational discourse. With regard to content, he explores similarities and divergences between the two philosophers' approaches to the concept of creation. An aspect of this is the pivotal role played by Avicenna's conception of ex nihilo creation in medieval philosophy, which Varlik interprets as indirectly influencing the distinction between origin and temporal beginning in Ricoeur. This is a vital contribution to the development of a living Islamic philosophy that skilfully navigates the tensions between the experience of the text and its conceptual dimension on the one hand and between fidelity to a philosophical tradition and semantic innovation on the other.
