Negative Theology and Christology: Ascension and Eucharist makes a critical and constructive contribution to systematic theology by exploring the meaningful interpretation of the doctrine of the ascension of Christ. Through an insightful reading of Christ's ascension to heaven as the concealment of the revealer?, the author investigates the extent to which negative theology illumines some of the deepest doctrinal structures of Christian faith. On the basis of close attention to tradition, both catholic and reformed, Norman provides a revisionist history of the doctrine of the ascension that challenges other recent accounts, and offers a corrective to simplistic and reductive interpretations of the place of heaven in Christian worldviews, ancient, medieval, and modern. Norman outlines the significance of the concealment of Christ to Christian life and thought, recovering the ascension as one of the most important mysteries of the faith. Ultimately, the argument contributes to meaningful interpretation of the Eucharist by moving, beyond discussions of presence and absence, towards a personalist account of sacramental encounter with the ascended Christ.

Popes and the Papal Court, 1503-1655 is the first book-length account of the early modern papal court in English. As well as bringing together art historical, social, and political studies in several languages, it contains a wealth of primary source material, such as advice manuals for cardinals and aspiring courtiers, accounts of Roman festivals, reports of visiting ambassadors and news reports from Rome deposited in the Vatican library. The book argues that during the 16th and 17th centuries, popes were conscious to varying degrees of their responsibilities to conserving and enhancing the status of the monarchy as something larger than themselves as individuals or their families, and as such they exhibited some characteristics of dynastic monarchies. Toby Osborne explores how the culture of the papal court and the ways in which it functioned as a point of contact between the ruler, certain elites, and other princes not only had similarities with dynastic states, but also set the standard for court life around Europe. By bringing to light recent scholarship written by continental historians, Popes and the Papal Court, 1503-1655 represents an important contribution to the scholarly endeavour to better understand the political culture of the papal states and the workings of the papal monarchy. As such, it will be illuminating reading for all students and scholars interested in early modern court history.

Susan M. Rieske presents an exploration of the phrase "this generation" and its central term, geneá, in the Gospel of Matthew. She investigates how it demonstrates the concept of two spiritual families: "this generation", who have persecuted God's servants throughout the ages, and the elect, the family of God. She provides an in-depth examination into how this contrast is part of a "wicked generation" motif that is evident in Hebrew Bible texts as well as Second Temple and New Testament literature, and how knowledge of this motif can improve understanding of Matthew's theology. Rieske demonstrates how "this generation" invokes the familiar story of the redemptive historical conflict between the elect and non-elect seedlines traced back to Genesis. By examining seven key passages of Matthew, including Matthew 1:1-17 to explore the purpose of Matthew's genealogy and the missing generation, and Matthew 17:14-20 to illustrate the identity of geneá, Rieske suggests that Matthew's Gospel is the contemporary expression of this longstanding redemptive historical reality. She concludes that this motif serves to legitimize the messianic family as the true children of God and heirs of the kingdom while explaining the persecution they faced at the hands of "this generation."

This book fills a gap in religious studies literature by providing a historical study of Black gospel music in Britain. While Black gospel music is a global phenomenon that evolved in many places, including the Caribbean, America and Europe, many still look to America for an understanding of its origin. Dulcie Dixon McKenzie challenges this approach, asserting that there is no universal, 'one-size-fits-all' historical account of Black gospel music. Instead, McKenzie offers an alternative to the American-dominated discourse, presenting Black gospel music as a tradition that was birthed in the churches founded by African Caribbean migrants during the post-war years in Britain. This book is structured around three main themes-context, culture and conservation-and features first-hand accounts from founding members of African Caribbean Pentecostalism, as well as from selected pioneers of singing and music within the various historic congregations. It explores topics such as the arrival and settlement of African Caribbean ancestors in Britain, the exporting of African Caribbean religious beliefs and practices, the growth of African Caribbean Pentecostal churches in Britain, and illustrations of a distinctive African Caribbean Pentecostal style of congregational worship.

Two convictions underlie this book. The first is that religious communities in a secular, pluralist society with an ageing population share some important features and respond to the challenges in similar ways. The second is that aged people may share a spirituality, insights and wisdom regardless of which religious group (if any) formally claims their allegiance.
