How an early modern surgeon and his accessible writings changed medical expertise and the communication of medical knowledge.&nbsp; &nbsp; Between 1497 and 1512, Hieronymus Brunschwig (c.1450-c.1530), an obscure craftsman from Strasbourg, wrote books on surgery and pharmacy that transformed medical expertise, how it was codified in print, and how it was communicated to new audiences. Brunschwig was an unlikely author. He apprenticed as a surgeon in the local guild and eventually kept his own apothecary shop. But he was remarkably well-read in surgery, alchemy, and medical theory, even if he lacked a university education. His unique authorial voice spoke to the healing practices of craftsmen and common people in a down-to-earth German dialect. &nbsp;Crafting Medicine by Tillmann Taape is the first in-depth study of Brunschwig and his works. In it, Taape argues that Brunschwig's writings shaped a nascent tradition of vernacular medicine. Brunschwig's books represent a key moment in the history of medical print, for they conveyed medical expertise to a new readership of non-academic practitioners, including laypeople who became a key audience for a flood of vernacular medical publications during the sixteenth century. Using Brunschwig's books as a unique window into the past, Crafting Medicine beautifully reconstructs the world of science inhabited by Brunschwig, his fellow craftsmen, his translators, and his readers.

Negotiating in/visibility documents the (in)visibility of women in science in the twentieth century. It combines individual and collective portraits with discussions of institutional structures, work cultures, science and domesticity, the pedagogy of science and the gendered dimensions of science communication. The twentieth century was a period when women started gaining access to science education and careers in unprecedented numbers. But why have they continued to be largely absent from the 'collective memory of science'? This volume seeks to investigate the politics of (in)visibility that helped relegate women to peripheral positions in the annals of twentieth-century science and understand how they negotiated their circumstances in regional and socio-political contexts that transcend the usual focus on the Western world. The chapters draw on a wide range of historical material and a multilingual archive in languages as diverse as Chinese, Czech, English, Greek, Hindi, Hungarian, Japanese and Romanian. They combine individual and collective portraits of women in science with discussions of institutional structures, work and associational cultures, science and domesticity, the pedagogy of science and science communication. Moving beyond simply theorizing (in)visibility, the book offers strategies for mainstreaming the history of women in science and rethinking our definitions of science, scientists and scientific labour to write more inclusive histories of knowledge making, pedagogy and communication.

Standardizing Sex traces the emergence of trans medicine in Scandinavia in the twentieth century, exploring the construction and negotiation of medical expertise among medical professionals, patients, and activists in the media and government bureaucracy. The book combines the author's analysis of medical records and other archival sources with oral history interviews with former patients, activists, doctors, psychologists, and civil servants. Physician-historian Ketil Slagstad uses the Scandinavian story of sex reassignment to anchor not only the role of the state but also bureaucracy and social rights. Scandinavian countries, he shows, played a foundational role in the emergence of trans medicine internationally. As a result, Standardizing Sex tells a transnational history of medicine that sheds light on a set of relations and problems that continue to impact discussions of trans medicine and trans rights around the world. Slagstad's sources offer a rare opportunity to explore the emergence of trans medicine in action in the clinic, laboratory, waiting room, and operating room, as well as in the bureaucrat's office, on the psychologist's couch, and in the publications and meetings of activist groups. Together, these sources allow for the analysis of the increasingly complex negotiations of nosological criteria, medical knowledge, and medical practices in a formative period for transgender medicine.
