Critically examining the prevalent belief that microcredit alleviates poverty and enhances borrowers' self-esteem, Microcredit Misallocation? Social Expenditure Patterns Among Poor Borrowers transcends corporate requirements to recognize the social obligations and non-commercial needs of impoverished borrowers. In this book, Rao empirically analyses the data of borrowers in Telangana, India, who obtained loans from a public sector bank branch in Hyderabad and a state-operated microfinance institution (MFI) in rural Balapur, to evaluate their actual loan usage compared to intended income-generating activity. The principal findings reveal that debtors consistently prioritize their immediate obligations, with a considerable share of the loans being allocated to sustenance, festivals, and children's marriages, whereas health and food constitute lower percentages owing to the availability of free services. Other factors, such as the loan's intended use, the borrower's dependency ratio, oversight, and attitudes towards repayment also affect such loan diversion. Providing crucial insights for bankers, practitioners, and policymakers, the results indicate that inadequate evaluation of borrowers' holistic economic, social, and sustenance requirements, coupled with swift technological advancements, propel microcredit misallocation-related behaviour. MFIs must formulate improved strategies and policies informed by these variables to optimize resource utilization and attain long-term financial stability for small-scale borrowers.

S.S. Pierce: A Boston Tradition chronicles the history of Samuel Pierce's iconic gourmet food and wine emporium. When Samuel Stillman Pierce opened his store in 1831, he vowed, "I may not make money for the next five years, but I shall make a reputation." Pierce went on to become well known as the purveyor of groceries, fancy goods, wines, and spirits to Bostonians in the nineteenth century, as well as providing provisions to the ships that sailed from Boston Harbor. Bartering with ship captains, he often exchanged his provisions for the delicacies that were brought to Boston from faraway ports. His renowned store catered to the carriage trade, and the company would be headed by four generations of the Pierce family. With its own coat of arms adorning a distinctive red label on canned goods, bearing the motto Puritas et Cura, and the largest line of privately packed fancy foods in the world, S.S. Pierce &amp; Company sold its wide assortment of delicacies at a chain of stores as well as through distributors across the United States and worldwide by mail order. S.S. Pierce &amp; Company was sold in 1967 to Laird Corporation, and in 1972 to Seneca Foods. Since 1986, it has been a part of Kraft Foods Group and M.S. Walker. In his book S.S. Pierce: A Boston Tradition, Anthony M. Sammarco recounts memories of the past and the shared tradition of how Bostonians reveled in the gourmet foods, fine wines, and Madeira of a once stalwart business.

Robert Barton has been incarcerated since adolescence in high-security federal prisons. Jack Donson is a retired Bureau of Prisons official who began as a correctional officer and rose to become a case manager. Drawn from more than fifty hours of interviews, their interwoven accounts reveal how a system designed to punish and control ends up brutalizing prisoners while simultaneously eroding staff morale, health, and judgment, producing an adversarial environment that makes everyone less safe.

A silent revolution is underway in India today. Starting in 2020, twelve states have rolled out unconditional cash transfers to nearly 118 million women. While the media disparages these transfers as 'freebies', Wages for Housework: India's Experiment with Unconditional Cash Transfers to Women offers the first book-length study of these transfers, using social reproduction feminism, particularly the wages for housework campaign, to theorize unconditional cash transfers as providing economic recognition of women's unpaid domestic and care work. Against the backdrop of a low female labour force participation rate, a residual welfare regime, and an entrenched culture of gendered familialism wherein women are presumed responsible for care, the book addresses arguments for and against unconditional cash transfers in feminist economics and welfare theory. In doing so, it recollects the vision of the founding mothers of the Indian Constitution who advocated for the recognition of women's unpaid work. It traces how Indian courts have, since Independence, treated women's unpaid domestic and care work as being on par with an occupation to hold that the economic recognition of unpaid work is a step towards the constitutional vision of equality and dignity. Through an in-depth study of unconditional cash transfers in three states, namely, Goa, Assam, and West Bengal (implemented in 2013, 2020, and 2021, respectively), Kotiswaran elaborates on state-specific welfare regimes and analyses the implementation of cash transfers through interviews with bureaucrats, academics, feminist activists, and women beneficiaries to understand if and how they have resulted in women's empowerment, whether in terms of education, paid employment, or the gendered division of labour. In conclusion, the work posits that unconditional cash transfers represent an unprecedented and welcome expansion of the Indian welfare regime and to be truly gender transformative, they need to be embedded in a broader feminist agenda for care. Forget Not is a fascinating memoir of three Peters who share not only a name but a legacy. Narrated by the youngest, Peter Alfred Wolvin Thomson, it reflects on his grandfather, Peter Alfred Thomson, and, more centrally, the life and business career of his father, Peter Nesbitt Thomson. Set against the changing landscape of Montreal, Quebec, and Canada from the late 19th century to the 1970s, this book is a history of enterprise and family and a vision of energy and power that helped shape a nation. The story begins with Peter Alfred Thomson, a Heinz salesman from Hamilton, Ontario, who co-founded the stock brokerage firm Nesbitt Thomson in 1912 and later Power Corporation of Canada in 1925. His son, Peter Nesbitt Thomson, inherited a substantial fortune in hydroelectric and petroleum concerns, which he took into bold new and creative directions throughout the turbulent 1960s. Rising nationalism in Quebec and resource nationalization would result in Thomson holdings being sold to BC Hydro and the Quebec government of Jean Lesage during the Quiet Revolution. By the end of the 1960s, Peter Nesbitt had sold Power Corporation of Canada to Paul Desmarais. Betrayed by a provincial liberal party that he had long supported, Peter Nesbitt would leave Montreal for good after the Parti Québécois was elected in 1976. Peter Alfred Wolvin Thomson recounts his own path in investment banking and real estate development, culminating in the Cayman Islands and controlling interests in WestIndies PowerCorporation/CaribbeanUtilities Company, the first company based in the Cayman Islands to be traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange. Both a personal reckoning with a family’s past and a chronicle of social, political, and business history, Forget Not examines the forces that drove business enterprises and families from Quebec during a turbulent era that transformed Canadian history.

Horton, Jr., the white Alabama Eighth Circuit judge who set aside the jury's guilty verdict in the second trial of defendant Haywood Patterson in Decatur. Of the three trial judges and more than one hundred jurors who considered the cases of the Scottsboro defendants, Horton was the only one to find that the evidence against them was virtually nonexistent.
