In Food and Feast in Premodern Outlaw Tales editors Melissa Ridley Elmes and Kristin Bovaird-Abbo gather eleven original studies examining scenes of food and feasting in premodern outlaw texts ranging from the tenth through the seventeenth centuries and forward to their cinematic adaptations. Along with fresh insights into the popular Robin Hood legend, these essays investigate the intersections of outlawry, food studies, and feasting in Old English, Middle English, and French outlaw narratives, Anglo-Scottish border ballads, early modern ballads and dramatic works, and cinematic medievalism. The range of critical and disciplinary approaches employed, including history, literary studies, cultural studies, food studies, gender studies, and film studies, highlights the inherently interdisciplinary nature of outlaw narratives. The overall volume offers an example of the ways in which examining a subject through interdisciplinary, cross-geographic and cross-temporal lenses can yield fresh insights; places canonic and well-known works in conversation with lesser-known texts to showcase the dynamic nature and cultural influence and impact of premodern outlaw tales; and presents an introductory foray into the intersection of literary and food studies in premodern contexts which will be of value and interest to specialists and a general audience, alike.

Food and Feast in Premodern Outlaw Tales

Following in the tradition of recent work by cultural geographers and historians of maps, this collection examines the apparently familiar figure of Robin Hood as he can be located within spaces that are geographical, cultural, and temporal. The volume is divided into two sections: the first features an interrogation of the literary and other textually transmitted spaces to uncover the critical grounds in which the Robin Hood 'legend' has traditionally operated. The essays in Part Two take up issues related to performative and experiential space, demonstrating the reciprocal relationship between page, stage, and lived experience. Throughout the volume, the contributors contend with, among other things, modern theories of gender, literary detective work, and the ways in which the settings that once advanced court performances now include digital gaming and the enactment of 'real' lives.

This book argues that food and feasting moments in modern outlaw tales illuminate that which bonds all humans, and it examines ways in which food and feasting are often used to note difference, create discord, and manipulate power dynamics.

This collection of scholarly essays presents new work from an emerging line of inquiry: modern outlaw narratives and the textual and cultural relevance of food and feasting. Food, its preparation and its consumption, is presented in outlaw narratives as central points of human interaction, community, conflict, and fellowship. Feast scenes perform a wide variety of functions, serving as cultural repositories of manners and behaviors, catalysts for adventure, or moments of regrouping and redirecting narratives. The book argues that modern outlaw narratives illuminate a potent cross-cultural need for freedom, solidarity, and justice, and it examines ways in which food and feasting are often used to legitimate difference, create discord, and manipulate power dynamics.

This book responds to moves to rematerialize the social sciences, to attend to the stuff of daily life, but challenges the social sciences to think beyond objects as stable things. It argues that objects are better seen as things coming apart, as en route to becoming something else, some stuff else, somewhere else. In the last decade there has been an explosion of interest in the relationship between migration and development. In particular, there has been much excitement about the potential for migration to make a positive contribution to development and concern about ensuring that development reduces the need for people to migrate. The ensuing 'buzz' has created much discussion but it is often surrounded by conceptual confusion and simplistic analyses. This volume will introduce the reader to the debates about migration and development and provide a critical overview drawing on insights from case studies of particularly migration practices, development interventions and policy initiatives from different regions of the world. The text begins by situating the recent burst of interest in broader historical currents of development discourse, examining some of the intellectual and political factors that have brought it to the surface now. It introduces the main elements of migration theory as it has been applied in the developing regions of the world, before presenting the theories proposing causal relationships between migration and development. The book will then explore these interactions in more detail by focusing on some of the key concepts that underpin much of the discussion, in particular remittances, diasporas and human capital. A central argument of the book will be that migration must be seen as intimately related to development and change rather than as a symptom of development failure. An exception is perhaps provided with the movement of refugees and other forced migrants and a chapter will examine the extent to which it is helpful to distinguish forced and voluntary migration in relation to development. The final section will critically review how the migration and development discourse has been adopted by policy makers in a range of initiatives. The book will conclude by reflecting on how the development and migration debate remains incoherent and contradictory in many respects. It will argue that migration brings a challenge to sedentary notion of development that has yet to be taken seriously by development scholars. Each chapter will include case studies from different parts of the world to illustrate the points being made. In contrast to much of the current literature on migration and development, each chapter will consider both internal and international migration
