The Fundamental Tendency of Our Time

There may exist something like the most unbearable of all philosophical thoughts. It is the thought of contingency and universality converging, intersecting, and being one and the same thing, approached from two different perspectives. Hardly anything is as unsettling as the insight into the absolute contingency of the emergence of universals, and the correlative realization that the only true universality is one of the contingency of everything. The goal of this book is to think this unbearable thought through to the end and face up to its most binding and disconcerting consequences. The history of science is full of theoretical unifications of two previously mutually exclusive concepts or two opposite realms (natural and unnatural motion in Galilei, terrestrial and celestial physics in Newton, man and animal in Darwin, electricity and magnetism in Maxwell, mass and energy, space and time, acceleration and gravity in Einstein, etc.). This book is based on the conjecture that what philosophy is lacking is a similar unification of the concepts of "contingency" and "universality." The book will thereby try to accomplish an operation that is implicit in the philosophy of Slavoj Zizek. In doing so, it will provide new answers to questions on the nature of contingency, necessity, predictability of the future, the validity of the laws of nature, the role of singularity in relation to universality, chaos and order, reality and truth. These answers will differ starkly from the ones advocated by contemporary philosophers such as Badiou, Meillassoux, some other speculative realists, and some analytical philosophers of science.

Heidegger's Metaphysics explores how Heidegger continued the project of Being and Time, developing a new kind of metaphysics through a critique of Kantian transcendental philosophy. Drawing on Heidegger's published work, lecture courses, drafts, and correspondence from the late 1920s, it reconstructs the philosophical justification for this project, its implications for Heidegger's phenomenology of time, and his understanding of philosophical concept formation. Daly proposes that Heidegger's project neither failed nor remained indebted to a Kantian transcendental framework, and challenges the widespread interpretation of Heidegger as a critic of metaphysics. Focusing on the concept of slowness in Gilles Deleuze's philosophy, this book diverges from the conventional interpretation of Deleuze as a philosopher of speed or even accelerationism, instead delving into the minor but critical themes in his works, from idiocy to catatonia. Advocating for a pragmatic reading of its source material, it utilises Deleuze's thought to address the urgent challenges in contemporary political and social philosophy, particularly the issue of acceleration in its subjective, socio-political, and ecological dimensions. The first part discusses the significance of analysing "slowness" and introduces the problem of social acceleration, featuring also the relationship of Deleuze's thought with theorists rarely invoked in Deleuzian scholarship, such as Martha Nussbaum or Hartmut Rosa. Using a wide range of examples and sources such as the lesser explored Deleuzian literary inspiration Heinrich von Kleist and Madame de La Fayette, the second part of the book delves deeper into the three manifestations of slowness in Deleuze's philosophy: the conceptual personae of the idiot, the animal, and the catatonic. These personae and the concepts they help develop are explored as potential strategies of active resistance against the facets of social acceleration.
