Icons, Legends, and Muses

The Shankill, a roughly mile long road in Belfast Northern Ireland, is home to a working class, Protestant community. Their history is complex and troubled and yet they have survived with pride and resilience. During the thirty years of sectarian violence, many stories of this community have been told. A Peace Agreement was signed in 1998 and most journalists and photographers packed their bags and left before the ink had dried. But it is still a fragile peace that remains. The Shankill: A Portrait of Pride and Resilience depicts a proud community defined by their traditions, hoping to move beyond their past. It is a portrait of today.

1937 could be named the summer of love for Lee Miller and Roland Penrose, who had recently met for the fi rst time, and their friends Max Ernst, Leonora Carrington, Picasso, Dora Maar, Man Ray, Ady Fidelin and more. This facsimile of Lee and Roland's photograph albums shows their summer holiday together, as portrayed in the feature fi lm Lee, and demonstrates the freedom and friendship of these artists as the Second World War looms on the horizon.

Kinship and Community: Highlights from the Texas African American Photography Archive celebrates the rich history of photography created by and for Black communities in Texas. From eighteenth-century ambrotype portraits by unidentified photographers to the work of self-employed photographers serving segregated towns and neighborhoods in the mid-twentieth century, a rich body of photography was created by and for Black communities in Texas. The Texas African American Photography Archive (TAAP), founded in 1995 by Alan Govenar and Kaleta Doolin, contains more than sixty thousand negatives and prints from this history. Kinship and Community distills the archive's remarkable photographs into a moving testament to the medium and its transformative power. Filled with joy and pride, the images in this volume portray exemplary individuals and groups while documenting the parades, church services, graduations, and sporting events that punctuated everyday life. These positive depictions of Black life, by countering the mainstream media's racist stereotypes, played a quiet but powerful role in the struggle for civil rights.	Today, community photography provides a model for collaborative image-making, its vitality stemming from this union of ethics and aesthetics. Many of the photographers featured in Kinship and Community learned their trade in the military or from other Black photographers. As the civil rights era progressed, their aptitude and artistry enabled them to develop an affirmative vision for African American communities in a deeply segregated state. Decades later, the time has come to celebrate the accomplishments of these talented photographers, who include A. B. Bell, Marion Butts, Rodney Evans, Elnora Frazier, Alonzo Jordan, Benny Joseph, and Eugene Roquemore.Copublished by Aperture and Documentary Arts.

The Minimalist Photographer

Covering more than a half century of dramatic social and political change, Ressler’s Photographs is an important document that, through vivid images and an engaging narrative, provides insight and meaning to the complex world we live in today. Global in scope, but with a focus on the Americas, the book begins in the tumultuous 1960s just one year after the Summer of Love (1967), when the author was a young college student who photographed the counterculture, street life on New York City’s gritty Lower East Side, and icons such as Andy Warhol and later Nina Simone, among others. The book then catapults us into a First Nation reserve in Quebec, Canada, as we follow Ressler’s trajectory from novice ethnographic image-maker to mature photographic artist––a career that parallels and comments on the growth of financial empires and consumerism as well as shifting trends in photography itself. 
Susan Ressler Photographs: 50 Years, No End In Sight is an impressive retrospective that traces over fifty years of artistic development. It includes six major bodies of photographic work introduced in her own words, complemented by two interpretive essays: one by Eve Schillo on Ressler’s California work, and the other an afterword by Mark Rice. Although some of the images appear in Ressler’s previous Daylight monographs (Executive Order and Dreaming California), many are published here for the first time. These include “At Owner’s Risk” (her Canadian First Nation photographs), “From Analog to Digital” (an account of photography’s transition from analog film to digital media), and “Beyond Borders” (work from Europe, Asia, and Israel). The book ends with “American Stories,” including South America and the export of US culture abroad, before Ressler comes home to Taos, New Mexico, where she lives and continues to make photographs today.

50 Years: No End in Sight

Cara Romero's first monograph, Panûpünüwügai (Living Light) explores the artistic practice of the celebrated Chemehuevi photographer and features written contribution from 23rd U.S. Poet Laureate Joy Harjo.Throughout her renowned creative practice, Romero has brilliantly challenged dominant narratives of Indigenous decline and erasure, disrupting preconceived notions about what it means to be a Native American. Her sophisticated images simultaneously acknowledge the injustices of colonialism while centering the humanity and vitality of her Indigenous collaborators, inviting audiences to engage in transformative dialogues. The photographic industry - its exhibitions, galleries, publications and auctions - employs thousands of women, but champions mostly men. To begin to redress the balance, here is a timely presentation of the work of over 30 female photographers working today.
