This book offers an intimate ethnographic window into the ways Chinese Muslims produce, maintain, and transmit religious, cultural, and historical knowledge through their everyday practices of heritage literacy. Sino-Muslims in China inhabit a unique landscape of religious and spiritual expression, shaped by the intersections of the Islamic faith with Chinese cultural traditions, and where the spoken and written word plays a vital role in sustaining Islamic heritage across generations. Drawing from multiple personal narratives across diverse regions - including Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, Qinghai, Gansu, Jilin, Henan, and Hong Kong SAR - this book illuminates the lived experiences of Chinese Muslims as they navigate the intersections of faith, language, and identity. These accounts trace practices of heritage literacy shaped by migration, linguistic-semiotic ideologies, life-cycle rituals, and forms of artistic expression. The authors show how practices of heritage literacy, rooted in Islamic traditions yet responsive to contemporary shifts, tether Sino-Muslims to a broader sense of Muslimness while also anchoring them in local Chinese cultural and historical milieus and diverse linguistic traditions. This interdisciplinary study offers new insights into the significance of heritage literacy in linguistic anthropological study, and the vital role of narrative in preserving and articulating Islamic heritage in China's evolving sociocultural landscape.

Political Theory 101 introduces readers to the basic themes, ideas, and arguments that have characterized and constituted political theory from ancient thought to the present.

For all their long histories, liberal parties win relatively little popular support in most of Western Europe. This book, however, highlights an influx of voters combining economically free-market and culturally cosmopolitan ('market cosmopolitan') policy preferences, and argues that liberal parties are uniquely well positioned to appeal to these voters, offering the potential for a sizeable increase in their electoral support. Combining voter- and expert-level data, Davenport shows that in ideological terms alone, the majority of liberal parties, termed 'social liberals', occupy more promising positions than any other group of parties due to their proximity to these market cosmopolitan voters. In practice, however, social liberals only win the support of a small proportion of these market cosmopolitans, who instead tend to vote for either conservative or social democratic parties. The fact that these voters overlook social liberals in favour of such ideologically diverse alternatives presents a clear puzzle which appears to run counter the accepted wisdom that voters support parties that best represent their own ideological positions. Having set out this puzzle, the book then moves on to set out a twofold explanation for it, highlighting both social liberals' negative non-ideological reputations and market cosmopolitans' pre-existing partisan loyalties. It concludes by noting that these voters retain the potential to reshape electoral politics in Western Europe, even if this potential has been as yet unfulfilled.

The Unfulfilled Electoral Potential of West European Liberal Parties

Revolutionary Anxieties studies the role of the liberal elite during the Egyptian transitional period (2011-2014). It shows how the election of the Islamists caused anxiety among the liberal and cultural elites that constituted Cairo's exclusive society. The book examines their relationship with other Egyptians--those who were not part of Cairo's exclusive society, including their servants, the city's poor, and members of Islamist parties. It further illustrates how the narratives of "others" relied on dichotomies such as "ugly versus beautiful" and "civilized versus uncivilized," familiar to scholars from the colonial era. The book also shows how, during the transitional period, Cairo's liberal elite attempted to assert their superiority in various fields. Performative practices related to gender, culture, and art; etiquette and manners; the use of foreign languages; and knowledge of Egyptian history all manifested the cultural capital of the liberal elite. One purpose of this book is to explore the uses of the past in legitimizing and reinventing current cultural and socio-political asymmetries. Throughout, I demonstrate how access to narratives of Egypt's past--understood as "liberal" and "civilized"--functioned as a critical resource for the elite who opposed the new Islamist rulers. The insistence on Egypt's true "civilized" character, which was seen as endangered by the Islamists, was closely tied to political calculations.

The purpose of this book is to explore the major conceptual differences between classical and modern political philosophy and to understand how these differences have yielded competing conceptions of justice. If ancient and modern thinkers used a different set of constructs, definitions, and methods to explain justice, then it is our duty to understand them. It is also our duty to understand why they have such differences. 
Modern thinkers, beginning with Thomas Hobbes, developed a thought experiment-the state of nature-that allowed them to redefine well-established political terms (nature, happiness, virtue, equality, freedom) to determine what people were like in the absence of any external authority, that is, a state. The argument was so compelling that their adherents applied this logic to determine what they deemed legitimate forms of government. In doing so, they made classical articulations of justice appear irrelevant. 
This shift-a seismic move away from more than 1,500 years of political philosophy, validated the new approach and called into question the approach of classical theorists. As a result, we now inhabit a world that sees little political significance in the work of the ancients. The classical theory of Plato and Aristotle appears too subjective. It seems too ideological and at times mystical. Such a momentous shift in thinking has resulted in a change in the way citizens see themselves in relation to the state and more importantly, toward each other.
