Focusing on the concept of slowness in Gilles Deleuze's philosophy, this book diverges from the conventional interpretation of Deleuze as a philosopher of speed or even accelerationism, instead delving into the minor but critical themes in his works, from idiocy to catatonia. Advocating for a pragmatic reading of its source material, it utilises Deleuze's thought to address the urgent challenges in contemporary political and social philosophy, particularly the issue of acceleration in its subjective, socio-political, and ecological dimensions. The first part discusses the significance of analysing "slowness" and introduces the problem of social acceleration, featuring also the relationship of Deleuze's thought with theorists rarely invoked in Deleuzian scholarship, such as Martha Nussbaum or Hartmut Rosa. Using a wide range of examples and sources such as the lesser explored Deleuzian literary inspiration Heinrich von Kleist and Madame de La Fayette, the second part of the book delves deeper into the three manifestations of slowness in Deleuze's philosophy: the conceptual personae of the idiot, the animal, and the catatonic. These personae and the concepts they help develop are explored as potential strategies of active resistance against the facets of social acceleration. With this book that radically opposes today's enamourment with speed and efficiency, Krzysztof Skonieczny shows how a Deleuzian theory of slowness can inspire productive resistance in the three areas that have been most vulnerable to omnipresent acceleration: our subjectivity, profoundly changed by the accelerating pace of life; our socio-political milieu, ruled by corporate efficiency; and our relationship to the environment, quickly heading towards catastrophe.

This work presents a different view of the Controversy, arguing that it was never satisfactorily resolved, and must continually return to confront the West, particularly at times when our ability to make sense of the world by declaring it to be merely a zone in which only necessity-relations are real gets put under particular pressure. The Controversy arguably returned once to the discourse after the First World War; Snow argues that it is now time to recognize that its third iteration has begun. The West’s ongoing annihilation and literal vanishing of the natural world of our direct experience, and the rapid proliferation of novel types of pseudo-worlds and even entire private rationalities, both imply the need to radically rethink the proper construction and use of the ontology of necessity, including why it should not in fact be used as – and cannot in fact coherently continue to serve us as – our primary way of understanding nature and existence. The radical critique of the ontology of necessity first offered two hundred years ago by the “losing” side of the Controversy forms a vital starting point for re-navigating the Controversy today. The stakes of the Controversy this time around are nothing less than the individual’s freedom and even survival as a full subject, and the possible unraveling of Western reason itself, which if it is allowed to happen – if the Controversy is not arbitrated differently this third time around – will have been predicted, in essence, two hundred years ago during the first appearance of this intriguing, crucial, and yet at its heart compellingly simple debate.Katherine C. What becomes of the sublime today, in a philosophy that discards the old oppositions between body and mind and embeds human reason in the creative evolution of life? In this book, Louis Schreel shows how Gilles Deleuze's life-long engagement with the Kantian sublime grappled with just this question. Its core argument centres on Deleuze's understanding of the sublime in terms of psychic individuation - a creative, self-organizing process that animates cognitive systems from within. Exploring Deleuze's transcendental philosophy through central concepts of self-organization, psychic individuation, passibility and infinity, this book shows how a new notion of the sublime emerges in a timely and novel way. In this way, Deleuze and the Immanent Sublime opens up an innovative perspective on transcendental philosophy, shedding new light on Deleuze's transcendental empiricism both in relation to Kant and to contemporary cognitive science. Engagement with previously untranslated writings from thinkers including Jean Petitot, Gilbert Simondon, Henri Maldiney and Erwin Straus adds further breadth to the development of Deleuze's ideas on the sublime in this systematic study.

Deleuze and the Immanent Sublime

Christian Wolff (1679-1754) war ohne Zweifel der historisch bedeutendste und sowohl national wie international - bis in die seinerzeit gerade erst entstehenden Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika - einflussreichste Philosoph der deutschen Aufklärung, ja vielleicht der Aufklärung überhaupt. Seine konsequent durchgeführte, auf der mathematischen Methode samt (soweit nur möglich) empirischer Bestätigung der Resultate beruhende Systematik umfasst alle akademischen Wissensgebiete und Disziplinen, inklusive von Mathematik und Theologie, und berücksichtigt ebenso ihre praktische bzw. technische Anwendung.<div>Wolffs einheitliches und durchaus enzyklopädisch angelegtes System des Wissens basiert auf klar und deutlich erkannten, d. h. vollständig analysierten und beweisbaren, Prinzipien in Logik, Metaphysik und Moral. Aus ihnen werden deduktiv durch gültige Schlüsse alle wahren Sätze abgeleitet, und zwar sowohl die notwendigen als auch die kontingenten. Da letztere allerdings widerspruchsfrei verneint werden können, macht ihr Beweis darüberhinaus auch eine empirische Bestätigung nötig. Schon deswegen bemüht sich Wolff um die Integration aller seinerzeit vorliegenden naturwissenschaftlichen Erkenntnisse (Newton) und ihrer technischen Anwendungen. Was derart für die theoretische Philosophie von der Ontologie über Kosmologie (Physik) und Psychologie bis zur Theologie gilt, gilt ebenso für die praktische Philosophie: Aus unabänderlichen moralischen Prinzipien, die auch für Gott selbst gelten und die auch Er nicht hätte anders machten können, entwickelt Wolff auf der irdischen Basis der Goldenen Regel seine Ethik aus dem Begriff des Glücks, während er sein - erstaunlich liberales - System des (Natur)Rechts unter Gebrauch desselben Prinzips auf die Begriffe von Eigentum und subjektiven Rechten gründet. Dieser universalistische Anspruch Wolffs bei gleichzeitiger Säkularität seines Systems alles möglichen Wissens führen neben allerhand philosophischen Einwänden, wie sie v.a. A.G. Baumgarten und Kant artikulieren, zu heftigen Auseinandersetzungen mit der Kirche im allgemeinen und dem Pietismus im besonderen, die zwar unterdrückt, jedoch nie aufgelöst werden konnten.</div><div>Trotz Wolffs überragender Bedeutung und trotz der Tatsache, dass sein kaum überschaubares Riesenwerk eine solche besonders wünschenswert macht, liegt bislang keine kurze und einem breiten Publikum von Studierenden, Fachleuten und philosophisch, historisch bzw. kulturell interessierten Lesern allgemein zugängliche, auf ca. 150 Seiten angelegte Einführung in seine Philosophie vor. Sie könnte innerhalb eines Jahres ab Beginn der Arbeit hergestellt werden.</div><div>
