This saw the US provide weaponry and training to non-state militias in an attempt to achieve strategic objectives without deploying large numbers of troops, in order to reduce blood-and-treasure costs, following the costly post-9/11 wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. By drawing upon a wealth of original interviews with American national security officials and the Syrians who worked with them on the ground, this book shows that despite being presented as a cost-saving panacea to intervention, this strategy came with significant - costly - and even deadly - consequences.

The religions of Asia continually fascinate people around the world. During the 20th century, the Taoist (Daoist) tradition of China became well-known. But even at the century's end, our understandings of Taoism was limited to what scholars of Asia and Western lands had revealed. Few knew of the probing researches also being conducted by scholars of Russia, particularly Evgeny Torchinov (1956-2003). Torchinov, Russia's leading authority on Taoism, died suddenly before completing the final English edition of his comprehensive introduction, Daosizm: Opyt Istoriko-religioznogo Opisaniia. Here at last is that English edition and we see Taoism through fresh eyes, revealing new insights into the minds and lives of centuries of Chinese Taoists.

Originally viewed with immense optimism and hailed as a panacea for overcoming violent conflict, peacebuilding today has emerged as one of the biggest development challenges facing the world. As a concept and strategy, peacebuilding has found positive resonance among INGOs and there is evidence of increasing peace building involvement of these organisations in post-conflict societies from Afghanistan to Angola, Sierra Leone to Iraq. This book explores the potential and viability of INGOs as sustainable peacebuilders, by examining and analysing the involvement of three organisations; International Alert, Conciliation Resources and World Vision in specific peacebuilding activities. On the basis of this analysis a model for effective INGO participation in the field of post-conflict peacebuilding is constructed which, if implemented, has the potential to ensure the meaningful and effective engagement of INGOs in peacebuilding activities.
