The first textbook of geoarchaeology provides an excellent introduction to a multifaceted discipline that is related to archaeology as well as to physical geography and other geosciences. The overview of the broad methodological diversity of geoarchaeology makes this book a reliable reference for students, researchers and practitioners. It is therefore an indispensable tool for all those who deal with questions of environmental and cultural history. Geoarchaeological issues are among the most popular topics within the disciplines involved. By deciphering geoarchives using modern dating and analysis methods and interdisciplinary approaches, it is possible to locate past cultures within their environment and reconstruct past landscapes. Especially in the age of global change, it seems all the more important to understand conditions, processes and dynamics of the past, not least in order to be able to apply insights gained to future developments. Pursuing a new global approach, this unique book provides an updated review of the geology of Iberia and its continental margins from a geodynamic perspective. Owing to its location close to successive plate margins, Iberia has played a pivotal role in the geodynamic evolution of the Gondwanan, Rheic, Pangea, Tethys s.l. and Eurasian plates over the last 600 Ma of Earth’s history. The geological record begins with the amalgamation of Gondwana in the Neoproterozoic, followed by the rifting and spread of the Rheic ocean; its demise, which led to the amalgamation of Pangea in the late Paleozoic; the rifting and spread of several arms of the Neotethys ocean in the Mesozoic Era; and concludes with their ongoing closure, which was responsible for the Alpine orogeny. The significant advances made in the past 20 years have attracted considerable international research interest in the geology of the Iberian Peninsula.  This volume focuses in the Cadomian orogenic cycle and the oldest geological records in the Iberian Peninsula.&nbsp;

The primary hydrologic parameters in assessing water resources are rainfall and runoff which also play a major role in controlling groundwater recharge. In light of the changing global climate, the socioeconomics and lifestyle modalities within the research region heavily depend on the hydrologic modelling of the catchments. Therefore, to simulate and estimate water availability, hydrologic models with reliable data must be used. In addition, reliable rainfall-based storm runoff forecasts are also essential for flood hazard mitigation and adaption. Floods rank among the catchment's most severe natural disasters, causing substantial property damage, fatalities, and economic risk. Jedes Jahr wird die Öffentlichkeit von Berichten über Naturereignisse und deren Folgen für die betroffenen Menschen erschüttert: Der Tsunami am 26. Dezember 2004 ging als eine der größten Naturkatastrophen der Neuzeit in die Geschichte ein, in den nachfolgenden Jahren wurden in mehreren Ländern Europas Jahrhunderthochwasser gemeldet. Und dieser Tage beherrschen Schlagzeilen über das verheerende Erdbeben in Nepal unsere Nachrichten. Diese und weitere Beispiele sind Thema des vorliegenden Lese- und Lehrbuchs. Die Geographie ist durch das Zusammenwirken von physio- und humangeographischen Ansätzen wie keine andere Wissenschaft dazu prädestiniert, die vielfach miteinander verknüpften Problemlagen einer Katastrophe in ihren zahlreichen Facetten und Handlungsdimensionen umfassend zu "begreifen". Wissenschaftler aus beiden Bereichen verknüpfen in diesem Buch die naturwissenschaftlichen Fragen nach den Auslösern von Naturkatastrophen - etwa mit Blick auf geotektonische Vorgänge oder klimatische Prozesse - mit gesellschaftlichen Fragestellungen: Hier geht es um medizinische und soziale Probleme, um die Verwundbarkeit bestimmter Bevölkerungsgruppen und um die Einbettung dieser Aspekte in globale Wirtschaftsverflechtungen.
