What can one city tell us about the global textile waste problem? This Open Access study is the first detailed ethnography of clothing waste infrastructures that starts where the problem starts - the Global North. Based on more than 100 interviews, cultural anthropologist Heike Derwanz follows the journey of fast fashion in Hamburg, Germany: starting with two women from different socio-economic backgrounds sorting through their wardrobes, travelling through local flea markets, eBay, church clothes banks, upcycling brands and recycling sites, only to end up in homes and waste heaps in the Global South. Bringing together human agents such as designers, social workers and vintage sellers with objects from containers, plastic sacks and internet platforms to piles of sorted textiles, this on-the-ground cultural study reveals how the global economic system of fast fashion shapes local infrastructures entangled in everyday lives. Combining material culture, waste studies and economic perspectives to scrutinize the so-called circular economy of today's global textile recycling market, Derwanz investigates what agency modern consumers really have in the lifecycle of their clothes. This book is founded upon the understanding that things matter to people. Exploring the renewing of practical theology through critical attention to the values and practices of everyday life, this book looks at how recent cultural and epistemological shifts have generated new agendas for theological thinking. Engaging with recent debates in many disciplines that have explored the relationship between persons and objects, Walton advocates a theological methodology which is radically incarnational, though proposing that incarnational theology itself must be rethought in the light of shifts in our understandings of materiality, epistemology and embodiment: when we speak of God integrally present in the material world, God as Word or God in flesh we can no longer assume that these affirmations carry the same meaning they once did. Introducing the work of new materialists focussing in particular on Miller and Bennett and their critique of materiality and appreciation of the sacred potentiality of things, Walton then explores the possibility of an affirmative approach to the created order - including material objects - which is based upon the radically incarnational aspects of the Franciscan tradition. Drawing upon insights offered in the work of Walter Benjamin, Michel de Certeau, Gaston Bachelard and others to construct a theological anthropology that celebrates the significance of things in human life, Walton goes on to argue that there can be discerned within the work of 20th century women writers a mystical appreciation of materiality which is congruent with the incarnational theology being developed within this work. Examples are drawn from the writings of Virginia Woolf, Ettie Hillesum, Elizabeth Smart and Michelle Roberts in order to establish how everyday material objects may become hugely spiritually significant to people. Finally, the book explores how habitual material interactions with things can be understood as sites of potential personal or political renewal.

A New Theology of Everyday Life

A new compass for global reading: looking at the world from the far southern latitudes A northern viewpoint is most often the default, while the south—the far southern latitudes occupied by Australia, New Zealand, Argentina and southern Africa, among others—seems far away and ignorable. In Southern Imagining, Elleke Boehmer offers an alternative perspective, using literary, scientific and cultural material to explore how we look at the world from the south. Reading, she argues, is a transformative means of reversing our usual planetary perspective and rearranging our perceptual geography. Boehmer examines writing from across southern continents and islands, considering how we imaginatively inhabit the farthest reaches of our planet. Writers ranging from the Portuguese epic poet Luís de Camöes to Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Charles Darwin, Katherine Mansfield, Jorge Luis Borges and ancient Indigenous scribes, Boehmer finds, capture the edgy and austere experiences of the far south. Boehmer argues that imaginative work stimulates and shapes our phenomenological understanding. Southerners often see themselves as if far away from where things count, as outsiders, internalising the wider global sense of their relative insignificance. Conversely, when northerners read or hear legends, narratives, songs and poems from the south, it is as if they are located in the south, at least for the duration of the reading or listening. Boehmer suggests that the south-tilted world map, re-centred through song and story, invites us to claim a more involved sense of belonging to our planet, both its north and its south. The writers of the south disrupt conventional ways of seeing and invite us to inhabit our globe differently.
