Hank Idsinga, whose grandfather was murdered in the Holocaust, became the country’s leading homicide detective; he shares his insights into tracking down murderers and serial killers over his colourful and decorated thirty-year career. From the age of ten, Hank Idsinga knew he wanted to become a homicide detective, when he learned that his grandfather had been murdered by the Nazis in the Second World War. He prepared to be a police officer his entire youth and soon found himself in ill-fitting suits training for the job. Ausgehend von einer vielschichtigen Analyse des tradierten Subjektbegriffs wird deutlich, dass das Subjekt nur eine philosophische Fiktion ist. Vor diesem Hintergrund stellt sich die Frage, von welchem Standpunkt aus seiner - im Unterschied zur philosophischen und psychologischen Subjektkritik - unreflektierten und theorielosen Demontage dennoch etwas entgegengesetzt werden kann. Vorgeschlagen wird ein existenzieller Bezug auf das Nichtidentische als Statthalter des individuell Besonderen im Sinne Adornos. Damit werden die klassischen Subjektattribute - Vernunft, freier Wille, Handlungsfreiheit und Autonomie - umgangen, während das Individuelle in seiner Abgrenzung gegen das Allgemeine bewahrt und gerettet wird.

Hans Weiss, aufgewachsen im Bregenzerwald, erzählt in seiner Autobiographie von seinem abenteuerlichen Leben als sehr erfolgreicher Buchautor, Journalist und künstlerischer Fotograf. Seine erste Freundin wurde zur Terroristin, er lebte zeitweise in London und New York, und in Wien längere Zeit in Wohngemeinschaft mit einem berühmten Schriftsteller.

Doing Nothing is a book about doing nothing in a system where there is always something pressing that ought to be done. Not the productive unstructured time of self-help books, but the aimless and ineffective doing nothing of procrastination, resignation, and melancholia. James Currie pursues these themes across a wide terrain of experiences, materials, and examples from the personal, local, and anecdotal, through to the existential, cosmological, and apocalyptic—reflecting, among other things, on the COVID pandemic, the lives of teenagers, Lars Van Trier’s 2011 film Melancholia, work, play, and politics.
