This book unveils the details of the processes and deliberations that culminated in the consensual global commitment to decisively confront racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and other forms of intolerance. It settles the pre-conceived and prejudicial controversies raised against the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action. High level delegates and leaders of structures of the conference address the development of the vision of nations for racial justice, building the structures of dialogue towards and during the third world conference against racism, choosing the leadership of the conference, consensus building especially on the so-called difficult issues, the role of championing states such as South Africa (host and then symbol of victory against racism) and Brazil (home to the largest population of people of African heritage outside Africa), and the legacy of the conference and outcome document. It reminds humanity of the merits and nobility of its Durban resolve, based on undertakings in Geneva, Strasbourg, Santiago de Chile, Dakar, and Teheran, under the auspices of the United Nations, and the significance of standing by it.

Untold Reflections from the World Conference Against Racism

Der Reichshofrat übte gemeinsam mit dem Reichskammergericht im Namen des Kaisers die Höchstgerichtsbarkeit im Heiligen Römischen Reich aus. Er fungierte darüber hinaus als oberster Lehnshof, als Beratungsgremium des Reichsoberhaupts und als Administrationsorgan der kaiserlichen Reservatrechte in Standeserhebungs- und Privilegienangelegenheiten. Das archivalische Erbe des Reichshofrats wird durch das Österreichische Staatsarchiv, Abteilung Haus-, Hof- und Staatsarchiv, in Wien verwahrt. Der Bestand erstreckt sich auf rund 1,3 Regalkilometer mit Zehntausenden von Akten und Amtsbüchern, die hochkarätige Quellen zur Geschichte Mitteleuropas in der Frühen Neuzeit enthalten. 
Seit 2007 wird dieser einzigartige Bestand im Rahmen eines deutsch-österreichischen Kooperationsprojekts unter der Federführung der Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Göttingen verzeichnet (www.reichshofratsakten.de). Diese Grundlagenarbeit eröffnet weitreichende Perspektiven für innovative Forschungen aus nahezu allen Bereichen der Rechtsgeschichte und der Geschichtswissenschaft. Mit den "Alten Prager Akten" und den "Antiqua" konzentriert sich das Erschließungsprojekt derzeit auf zwei Aktenserien, die schwerpunktmäßig die Tätigkeit des Reichshofrats im 16. und 17. Jahrhundert dokumentieren.

Globalisation and the fundamental transformations of the 19th and early 20th centuries also brought about a change in international law. In the face of the omnipresent struggle for influence between the great powers, a movement gained ground on the international scene that sought to base international order on rules and to protect peace through international dispute settlement bodies. The Hague Peace Conferences (1899, 1907), the Pan-American Conferences (1889, 1901, 1906), and the Washington Conference (1907) were the first major steps in this direction. This work analyses these developments, taking into account perspectives from Europe, the United States, and Latin America, and traces the path to the creation of the first international court of law.

The Origins of an International Legal Order of Peace and Justice

This book excavates the often neglected role of the Polish government-in-exile within the Allied war crimes trial programme and post-1945 international law. Drawing on newly examined archival sources and biographies of key émigré lawyers, it reveals how Polish and other European jurists helped define the concept of accountability for wartime atrocities long before the Allies convened at Nuremberg. Combining legal and historical approaches, this book traces the Central and Eastern European influences on the UN War Crimes Commission and Allied policy, showing how their ideas about justice, responsibility, victim's perspective, and law continue to resonate in modern interpretations of the legacy of Nuremberg.

Das Rheinische Recht stand lange zwischen den Forschungsschwerpunkten. "Romanisten" war es zu wenig römisch, "Germanisten" zu französisch. Seine nur regionale Geltung trug zusätzlich dazu bei, das Rheinische Recht als folgenlosen Sonderweg "links des Rheins" abzutun. Der Band möchte diese Perspektivverengung überwinden. Erstmals wird das Rheinische Recht auch von Kennern anderer Rechtskreise des 19. Jahrhunderts in den Blick genommen. Der thematische Zugriff ist dabei weit. Ziel ist, die Forschung zur Rechtsgeschichte an Rhein und Mosel zu beleben, das Rheinische Recht an aktuelle rechtshistorische Projekte anzubinden, und es als Erscheinung zwischen Region und Europa zu verorten.

This book explores the apex of the Roman Republic, positing that the Republic has been one of mixed characteristics combining monarchic, oligarchic, aristocratic and democratic elements in its constitution. It offers unique analytical insights into the golden constitutional era of the Roman Republic by exploring the essence, the fundamentals, the historical roots and the structures of its institutions. In addition to exploring the apex of the Republic and the reasons behind it, the monograph taxonomises and explores the constituent elements of the Republic.
