Fürsten und Finanzen im Mittelalter

»Fürsten und Herren ... können nichts erreichen, wenn sie kein Geld haben.« Kaum ein Satz bringt die Motivation und Berechtigung, sich mit »Fürsten und Finanzen im Mittelalter« zu befassen, so prägnant auf den Punkt wie diese Bemerkung Levolds von Northof in seinem Fürstenspiegel von 1357/58. Dem Forschungsdesiderat einer Geschichte der fürstlichen Finanzen im Mittelalter begegnet dieser Tagungsband, indem darin nicht nur Finanzenquellen und Schulden weltlicher Fürsten thematisiert werden, sondern auch der Blick auf geistliche Fürsten, auf Fürstinnen sowie auf fürstliche Witwer, auf Fürstenspiegel und überhaupt die Literatur jener Zeit und zudem auf den chinesischen Kaiser ausgedehnt wird. Finanzgeschichte unter Berücksichtigung der Genderforschung, im interdisziplinären Zugriff sowie im interkulturellen Vergleich - das hat es neben der Behandlung »klassischer« Felder der Fürstengeschichte so bisher noch nicht gegeben! »Princes and lords ... can achieve nothing, if they have no money.« Hardly any sentence sums up the motivation and justification for dealing with »Princes and Finances in the Middle Ages« as succinctly as this remark by Levold of Northof in his mirror for princes of 1357/58. This conference volume addresses the research desideratum of a history of princely finances in the Middle Ages. It does not only address the sources of finance and debts of secular princes but also extends the view to ecclesiastical princes, princesses, and princely widowers, to mirrors for princes and to the literature of the time in general, as well as to the Chinese emperor. Financial history taking gender research into account, in an interdisciplinary approach as well as in an intercultural comparison - this has never been done before besides the treatment of »classical« fields of princely history.
