This book investigates how pre-nationalist ties between Mediterranean cultures have been inherited, repurposed and rejected by nationalist movements from 1815 until the present day. The book uses five case studies of regional nation-states to explore this theme of 'transnational nationalism': Italy, Greece, Turkey, Lebanon and Libya.

Transnational Nationalism in the Mediterranean Sea

The purpose of this book is to explore the major conceptual differences between classical and modern political philosophy and to understand how these differences have yielded competing conceptions of justice. If ancient and modern thinkers used a different set of constructs, definitions, and methods to explain justice, then it is our duty to understand them. It is also our duty to understand why they have such differences. 
Modern thinkers, beginning with Thomas Hobbes, developed a thought experiment-the state of nature-that allowed them to redefine well-established political terms (nature, happiness, virtue, equality, freedom) to determine what people were like in the absence of any external authority, that is, a state. The argument was so compelling that their adherents applied this logic to determine what they deemed legitimate forms of government. In doing so, they made classical articulations of justice appear irrelevant. 
This shift-a seismic move away from more than 1,500 years of political philosophy, validated the new approach and called into question the approach of classical theorists. As a result, we now inhabit a world that sees little political significance in the work of the ancients. The classical theory of Plato and Aristotle appears too subjective. It seems too ideological and at times mystical. Such a momentous shift in thinking has resulted in a change in the way citizens see themselves in relation to the state and more importantly, toward each other.

Bringing together diverse case studies and interdisciplinary perspectives, this open access collection serves as the first in-depth examination of queer and trans displacement in East Africa. The collection features original creative works by queer and trans diasporic writers and artists with first-hand experiences of displacement. The last decade has seen a sharp rise in state-sponsored homophobia and transphobia in East Africa. This includes discriminatory legislation, such as the widely condemned Anti-Homosexuality Act in Uganda, and government-initiated crackdowns, such as the 'anti-gay taskforce' launched in Tanzania in 2018. The politicisation of sexual and gender rights in the region is often presented as a moral crusade (i.e. a return to traditional/family values) and is enacted with the support of many religious and cultural leaders. It is within this context that an ever-increasing number of LGBTQI+ people are leaving their homes and seeking protection elsewhere. But East Africa cannot be reduced to a site from which LGBTQI+ displacement emanates. Several countries in the region act as either host countries or transit points, even as they produce LGBTQI+ refugees of their own. These complex social, political and legal dynamics make East Africa a productive site for theorising queer and trans displacement. The region offers insights into how, when and why LGBTQI+ Africans move, the social obstacles they face, and the different survival strategies they deploy. Despite this, research on East African queer and trans displacements remains sparse. The often-forgotten global story of how the Confederacy lost its bid for sovereign nationhood In 1861, proslavery secessionists severed ties with the United States, launched the Confederacy, and readied their new government to join the international community as a sovereign nation. In The First Pariah State, Robert Bonner tells the story of how a transatlantic publicity campaign dashed Confederate hopes by ostracizing its rebellion as an immoral, global menace. The international anti-Confederate campaign built on existing antislavery themes but moved far beyond them. Improvised indictments circulated secessionists’ most incendiary words across the world. The Union and its foreign allies condemned the marauding Southern navy for disrupting high-seas commerce, violating civilized norms, and preparing for the resumption of the African slave trade. Abraham Lincoln and Senator Charles Sumner sought to convert rhetorical barbs and maritime anxieties into novel doctrines of international law designed to counter rogue regimes. And Union opinion-makers, including Black abolitionists, worked with European supporters to stymie the South’s naval expansion, war finances, and diplomatic efforts to gain formal recognition. International worries about the Confederate rebellion waned after U.S. victory, and the Southern pariahdom of the 1860s left few enduring traces in international law or overseas remembrances. In fact, over the next century and a half, the pro-Confederate “Lost Cause” mythology proved to be as powerful abroad as it was within the restored United States.
