How artists of interwar Paris created an "art of living," treating their daily lives as an aesthetic, ethical, and creative practice. With The Art of Living in Avant-Garde Paris, Rachel Silveri takes a fresh look at the desire to unify art and life, an ambition long regarded as foundational to the European historical avant-gardes. She reveals how many early twentieth-century artists saw their own everyday lives--their bodies, identities, and relationships--as a type of creative material and a central component to their avant-garde practice. These artists abandoned traditional forms of artmaking and venues of art viewing, instead aspiring to integrate art with everyday life, creating an "art of living." Considering Tristan Tzara's performances of Dadaist identity, Sonia Delaunay's simultaneous fashions and self-branding, and the collective endeavor to open and operate the Surrealist Research Bureau, Silveri offers a new narrative about how the artists of interwar Paris developed experiential life practices that resisted dominant forms of "lifestyle" and normative discourses surrounding gender, ethnicity, and office work. Front Lines: A Lifetime of Drawing Resistance is Susan Simensky Bietila's story of her six decades as a movement artist and activist and a lifetime of artistic collaborations rooted in her activist experience. Growing up during McCarthyism, she rejected the nationalist masculinity of elite art and conformist culture and found feminism and collectivism as new forms of resistance. She became an artist in the New Left, creating illustrations for radical underground publications including RAT, Subterranean News, and comics for the anarchic World War 3 Illustrated.
With more than one hundred images, Front Lines documents her art on the page and in action featuring protest banners and giant puppets of birds and fish carried in the streets, masks of notorious dictators for street theater, posters pasted on walls and hung in radical spaces, community art builds, and more. Visual storytelling and detailed captions contextualize and bring to life her work with movements including antiwar protests during the Viet Nam era, Indigenous led antimine and antipipeline struggles, water protection, immigrant rights, anticorporate globalization convening, protests against the state and capital, Palestinian liberation actions, and collaborations with groups throughout the Great Lakes region and beyond. This book examines how the Arab Gulf Crisis (2017-2021) led to a robust social media reaction that seemingly - and perhaps perpetually - changed the ways in which religious authority manifests in the digital age. Positioning the Arab Gulf Crisis as a key moment in the transformation of public religious expression in the Gulf, Ibrahim N. Abusharif investigates how religious authority was mobilized through digital media, where the authority of traditional scholars contended with a networked public sphere. This shift was most prominently evident in social media spaces, with the proliferation of texts which used Islamic language and philosophy to both justify and contest the political blockade of Qatar by neighboring states. While the crisis largely unfolded via traditional geopolitical measures - severing diplomatic ties, imposing blockades, and disrupting trade - the digital battlefield became a parallel front in which state actors, religious scholars, and influencers competed for narrative control. Drawing on analysis of media texts by Gulf-based religious figures, the book demonstrates how scriptural allusions, moral framing, and juridical language were deployed to endorse and critique the crisis. Through these analyses, Abusharif challenges prevailing binary frameworks and proposes an interdisciplinary methodology which combines media studies and Islamic studies to more fully understand the complex digital discourses associated with this conflict. Ultimately, this work offers a deep examination of how religion, media, and politics intersect in the digital age and considers how future crises might continue to develop across both physical and digital terrains.
