This book explores twenty-first century environment-themed advertising with a global reach in relation to three key emerging persuasive themes: governance, morality and transnational rhetoric. Adopting a social semiotic approach, and exploring key examples including Greenpeace's "Everything is NOT Awesome" brandjacking advert, Volkswagen's "Think Blue" campaign and Unilever's "Why Bring a Child Into This World?" advert, Alexander puts forward a number of observations about the ideological character and function of environmental advertising as a new form of transnational persuasion.

This book is an attempt to provide a philosophical answer to the simple question, "What is the law?" as well as address the various debates this question has spawned. Along the way, it develops a unique position within analytic jurisprudence by carefully distinguishing between a theory of the nature of a legal system and a theory of the nature of legal content (that is, of individual laws). Finally, it applies the framework established in the first part of the book to two substantive areas within legal theory: legal reasoning and international legal systems. The result is a unique introduction to the philosophy of law, one that presents and tests a theory of analytic jurisprudence, while it introduces students and others to this sub-field of philosophy.

GrundideenDie Unterrichtsmodelle der Reihe EinFach Philosophieren bieten Bausteine für den Philosophie- und Ethikunterricht der Sekundarstufen I und II, die sich in zweierlei Hinsicht von den "herkömmlichen" Modellen und Materialsammlungen unterscheiden.Erstens orientiert sich EinFach Philosophieren - ganz im Sinne moderner Curricula für den Ethik- und Philosophieunterricht - daran, philosophische Kompetenzen (weiter) zu entwickeln, etwa die Argumentations- und Urteilskompetenz oder die Kompetenz, Begriffe präzise zu definieren. Dabei wird nicht auf klassische philosophische Texte verzichtet, doch ist das Ziel nicht in erster Linie die Vermittlung mehr oder weniger kanonisierter philosophischer Theorien mittels entsprechender Textauszüge aus Werken der Philosophiegeschichte, wie es in vielen verfügbaren Schulbüchern üblich ist.Zweitens liefert EinFach Philosophieren im Unterschied zu den meisten vorhandenen Unterrichts­ma­terialien nicht nur sofort einsetzbare Kopiervorlagen, sondern bietet gleichzeitig einen umfassenden didaktischen Kommentar. Es wird eine Fülle von Anregungen für motivierende Einstiege, ergiebige Textarbeit, dem Unterrichtsinhalt angemessene Sozialformen, fruchtbare Diskussionen u. v. m. gegeben. Außerdem werden mögliche Schülerergebnisse antizipiert, so dass Lehrerinnen und Lehrer auch ohne zeitraubende Einarbeitung das Material sofort einsetzen können.Die Gesamtstruktur der Hefte ist modular, d. h. es werden vielfältig einsetzbare Bausteine präsentiert, die keine lineare Unterrichtssequenz darstellen.Didaktische GrundsätzeEinFach Philosophieren bedeutet nicht "philosophieren light", sondern ist eher im Sinne von "einfach losphilosophieren" zu verstehen, ausgehend von Alltagsintuitionen - in Anlehnung an Karl R. Poppers Auffassung, dass die wissenschaftliche Philosophie die Aufgabe hat, unsere vorhandenen Alltagsphilosophien kritisch zu untersuchen. Dies wird durch anregende Arbeitsaufträge und vielseitiges Material (Fallbeispiele, Bilder, Zeitungsartikel etc.) erreicht, das zunächst dazu dient, Alltagsintuitionen überhaupt bewusstzu­machen, zu ordnen und präzise zu formulieren. Das Heranziehen von wissenschaftlich-philosophischen Texten erfolgt dann niemals als Selbstzweck, sondern stets vor dem Hintergrund eben dieser Intuitionen. Die Schülerinnen und Schüler gewinnen auf diese Weise Kriterien für die eigene philosophische Urteilsbildung.Damit folgt EinFach Philosophieren der Überzeugung Kants, dass man das Philosophieren, nicht aber die Philosophie lehren könne.

What role do subcultures play in the radicalisation of Islamist, right-wing and left-wing groups? How are the norms of subcultures adopted by radicalised individuals and reflected in their lifestyle, identity and choices? Violent radicalisation is often portrayed as a deviant behaviour resulting from social and political dissociation. At the same time Islamist, right-wing and left-wing terrorist groups have all found sections of the population to sympathise with their aims and provide them with moral and logistical support. Through comprehensive systematic research, rigorous analysis of the empirical data and a range of interviews with active and former radicals Daniela Pisoiu construct a theoretical framework to explain the transition to radicalisation and political violence in Germany. Her conclusions provide us with a wider understanding of the role of subcultures in violent radicalisation and demonstrates that, far from a marginal and abnormal phenomenon, this radicalisation is a matter of traceable long term and holistic socialisation.

This book examines two main themes which had national significance in eighteenth-century British Methodism. First, the interaction between the two distinct theological expressions of Methodism; Calvinist and Arminian. The 'parting of the ways' marks the first major split in Methodism as the differences of theological understanding changed into the demarcation of religious organisations. The core of the book will feature a series of case-studies which explore Calvinist and Arminian Methodists in a number of key locations, where competition and even religious take-over bids were used by John Wesley's movement to gain religious dominance. Secondly, the book explores the nature of John Wesley's leadership of his movement, and especially how the competition between the Calvinist and Arminian strands of Methodism made it necessary for Wesley to change the way he exercised his leadership and authority. This will be examined through Wesley's role as connexional leader and his relationships with individual preachers and society members. Hart also explores both the reasons his leadership changed over the period of the study and the impact these changes had in the local context. The book will explore how these changes were made necessary by the increasing size of his 'Connexion' and the attendant changes in the application of Wesleyan discipline especially on the itinerant preachers. Whilst much has been written about Wesleyanism, and more specifically about John Wesley as a religious leader, and there is now an increase of interest in George Whitefield and the Calvinist branch of Methodism. This book is unique in examining how the two affected each other at the local level. The book shows that, however united were the leaders of early Methodism even in their theological diversity, in promoting evangelical revival their unity was not strong enough to hold together the religious movements they founded.
