Originally published in 1964, at a time of much public unease regarding redundancy, this book contains the results of a comprehensive survey, inspired by a suggestion of the then Minister of Labour that the mass redundancies in the Midlands motor industry of 1956 merited a full-scale investigation. The findings are based on an analysis of a 1 in 10 sample of men made redundant in Birmingham in the period. Among the matters examined are the difficulties encountered in obtaining work after redundancy; the range of geographical mobility and the role played by the then employment exchanges in securing new employment. Other chapters focus on the financial hardship caused; the resort to savings and the impact of the redundancies on the gender balance in the workforce. The impact of the dismissals on trade union affiliation is also considered, as are the men's verdicts on the 'fairness' of the selection procedure adopted.

While in custody, she was tortured and raped by French soldiers. Originally published in 1971, this wide-ranging study illuminates many crucial wage and employment issues by examining the operation of local labour markets and by testing labour market theory against the observed behaviour of employers and employees in different labour market environments. It is based on an empirical investigation of engineering plants both in major conurbations and in smaller labour market areas. There is an emphasis on measurement and quantification, which provides a fund of information on such subjects as wage structures, labour turnover, recruitment and mobility, internal labour markets, manpower forecasting, apprentice training and redundancy. The authors outline the weaknesses of applying economic theory to labour market behaviour.

This book was originally published in 1981 at a time when mass unemployment had returned to the United Kingdom. Now reissued with a new Preface by the author's literary executor, the essays in this volume discuss in detail the damage that was being done to the community and the economy at national and regional levels as a result of government policy. There are chapters on the political and economic aspects of the problem, on the comparison with the inter-war years, on youth unemployment and on unemployment in each of the regions worst affected. The collection as a whole provides an authoritative overview of a central political issue of the late 20th Century but one which still has resonance today as the post-Covid, post-Brexit UK economy teeters on the edge of recession.

Originally published in 1989, this study provides an informed and critical analysis of local partnerships between the private and public sectors in response to the unemployment problems. Until this book was published, there had been little objective analysis of the workings of the local partnership model with big business. This book assesses the contribution of local enterprise agencies, and how they related to other dimensions of policy responses to unemployment. An important element of the analysis is a number of local case studies of established partnerships in different parts of the United Kingdom. The book discusses the factors that lead to effective local response, in terms of organizational structures and networks and programmes of activity. It places local factors in a wider political and economic context in order to provide a realistic assessment of the motives and impact of policy actors.
