This is a pioneering work on the study of popular music—songs and dances—from the eighteenth to early twentieth centuries. The piano was the dominant solo instrument in European art music of this period, including Spanish, and Ana Benavides uses this as a vehicle for examining a wide variety of vernacular songs and dances, offering a wealth of musical, historical, and ethnographic insight. First published in Spanish in 2019, this translation by Walter Aaron Clark shows how one of the most frequent and established practices in the history of Western art music has been the borrowing and reinterpretation of traditional and popular musics, which reflect the lives and spirit of those outside the upper social strata. This volume provides an exploration of specific folk-inspired works with an inquiry into the historical cross-pollination between popular and classical musical idioms. It will prove invaluable not only to pianists but also to scholars, performers and students in general.

This collection of studies represents the range of Rosand's contribution to the history and criticism of music of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Varied in focus and scope, each of these studies is directed toward developing an understanding of the ways in which music works. Taken together, the articles demonstrate how Rosand has opened entirely new prospects on seventeenth-century music and offered new insight into the more canonical repertoire of the eighteenth century.

This collection of studies by Ellen Rosand represents the range of her contribution to the history and criticism of music of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.  Varied in focus and scope, each of these studies is directed toward developing an understanding of the ways in which music works--from its function in representing the ideals of the Republic of Venice through its essential role in the emerging genre of opera, from the expressive mechanics of Monteverdi and Cavalli to those of Handel and Vivaldi.  With methodological flexibility, Rosand's analyses are responsive to the works themselves. In early modern Italy, letters were not only written and read but, in some cases, sung. Musical settings of love letters rekindled a complex kind of vocality which was rooted in the letters of antiquity and endured in the musical sub-genre of the lettera amorosa. Epistolary poetry served to transform, or, to echo Achillini's lettera set by Monteverdi (1567-1643), to 'distill' a lover's thoughts and emotions into verse, and the music that set it was equally transformative. The history of musical letters spans several centuries. It begins in the early sixteenth with a setting of Ovid's Heroides by Tromboncino; returns in the early seventeenth through the lettere amorose of Monteverdi, D'India, and Frescobaldi; and ends with epistolary cantatas by Carissimi, Melani, and Domenico Scarlatti. This Element traces the breadth and significance of the musical love letter with a focus on the provocative lettere amorose of the seventeenth century.

Musical improvisation is a complex form of creative human expression. In this book, Sabina Rakcheyeva explores the logical outcomes of performance, relating them to existing theories and expanding those theories with new findings. Rakcheyeva begins with an examination of the attributes of musical improvisation, how it is practised, its logic, the creativity of the process and the role of the audience in performance. The book's second half is devoted to a description of a performance-based research project involving the author, a violinist, and members of her ensemble. A self-referent endeavour involving cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary analyses, investigates aspects of improvisation in recent musical practice, juxtaposing this onto the author's own performance experience and elaborating, in particular, on how improvisation encapsulates processes of imagination, creation, and collaboration among musicians from different music backgrounds. Taking the music performance to a next stage, the author explores the ways of how musical collaboration as a tool of public engagement can contribute to promoting understanding and preventing and resolving conflict, in a search of methodology for improving the effectiveness of current practices

Music as Cultural Diplomacy: Using Improvisation as a Creative Tool

Music Theory in Britain, 1500–1700: Critical Editions

The critical edition of John Playford's Introduction to the Skill of Musick (1672, Sixth edition) represents the contents of Playford's seminal pedagogical treatise in the middle of its development. Although Playford's Introduction was one of the most famous music texts of the period, a satisfactory modern edition of its contents has not yet been published. This is due, in part, to the fact that the interior contents of the Introduction changed markedly throughout its publication run from 1654 to 1730 (though post-1694 changes are minimal). This edition addresses this issue by presenting not only the transcription of the 1672 edition, but detailed contents of the entire publication run to better understand the shifting contents of the major sections of the work from its beginnings to the turn of the century. The contents include an introductory essay concerning the development of the series, divided according to the main sections of the text: The Grounds and Rules of Musick, Instructions and Lessons for the Bass Viol, and The Art of Descant. The body is a full transcription of the 1672 edition with images. Two appendices contain 1) critical notes on the text and a comparison of the major changes-section changes, major wording and style changes, repertoire lists, along with significant codicological amendments-between editions using 1672 as the model, and 2) a list of all of the music in the different editions of the Introduction, including information regarding in which editions the pieces may be found and a reference to modern editions on those works.
