Marvin Gaye sang like he lived in bed. He could croon, deliver a political commentary, and sing to you like you were the only other soul on this earth. And in 1976 he gave us a taste of his erotic imagination with I Want You. An album made in honor of his ongoing love affair with Janis (Jan) Hunter, Gaye delivered excess and restraint to sound his desire. I Want You is an album that stands apart from Gaye's earlier collaborations with Diana Ross, Tammi Terrell, Mary Wells, and Kim Weston. Though not technically a duet, Gaye forges another kind of collaboration with Jan, the result of which is an album that provides an intimate portrait of an artist in love and lust. Using interviews, visual art, poetry, criticism, and gossip, this book explores ecstasy, funk, sensation, and a host of other delicious and fleshy concerns that animate I Want You. It does not attempt a strict historicization of the album as that would do it a disservice. Instead, this book seeks fidelity to the album by centering Gaye's fantasies, his engagement with Ernie Barnes' painting Sugar Shack, and sonic expression of desire for Jan.

Endrinal's analyses reach beyond the traditional focus on melody, harmony and rhythm, drawing on new computer assisted analytical techniques to explore texture, timbre and instrumentation. More than a study of one band, then, this book offers new analytical methods for the study of popular music.

What musical elements define the unmistakable, yet constantly evolving, 'U2 sound'? How is their enormously engaging music constructed? How have U2 maintained their prominent position in the  ever-shifting world of popular music? Let Me In The Sound: The Sonic Signature of U2 addresses  these questions in a three-tiered music-theoretical dissection of the band's unique sound. Endrinal begins by identifying the salient sonic characteristics that combine to form U2's distinctive musical autograph.  With those characteristics established, the book examines the various approaches to formal organization found in the band's oeuvre. Finally, detailed analyses of several songs from across the band's career demonstrate how U2 construct songs and how each member of the band contributes his own unique musical perspective to these formal designs. In the early twenty-first century we are inundated with technologies and discourses that privilege the apparently liberating immaterial aspects of digital culture. Despite, or perhaps because, of this, the making of material objects continues to be of importance in people's everyday lives. Including case studies on guitar makers, homemade recording equipment, car audio culture, and 3D printing of musical instruments, Gavin Carfoot critically examines the ways that musical objects are produced through social and cultural practices and forms of labour, in co-constitutive ways between human makers and non-human objects.
