Was fasziniert heute an diesem unverwechselbaren Autor, radikalen Provokateur und vermeintlichen Misanthropen? Wie lässt sich das anhaltende Interesse an Übersetzungen, Inszenierungen, literarischen Fortschreibungen erklären? Und ist Thomas Bernhards Stil tatsächlich so leicht imitierbar, wie manchmal behauptet? 
Der Band rückt nie gezeigte Fundstücke in den Fokus, darunter Manuskripte, Briefe und Fotografien aus allen Lebensphasen: von der Landgarderobe bis zum New Yorker Hemdenkauf, von Kinderzeichnungen bis zu selbstentworfenen Möbeln. Rastko Petrovi¿ verließ Serbien im Ersten Weltkrieg und wurde in Paris Teil der Bohème um Pablo Picasso, Paul Éluard, André Breton. Er ent­wickelte seinen eigenen, provokanten Stil und galt in den 1920ern als einflussreichster Dichter Jugoslawiens und war last not least geprägt durch seine Homosexualität, die zu dieser Zeit noch kriminalisiert wurde. Er bereiste als Ethnologe Afrika und ging als Diplomat in die USA. Im neuen, sozialistischen Jugoslawien wird er ab den fünf­ziger Jahren, nach Titos Bruch mit Stalin, als Klassiker anerkannt. Robert Hodel gibt eine Einführung in Rastko Petrovi¿s unorthodoxes Leben und stellt repräsentative Werke in deutscher Übersetzung vor.

Rastko Petrovi¿ (geb. 1898 in Belgrad, gest. 1949 in Washington): War der neunte Sohn seines Vaters Dimitrij, eines Historikers, und seiner Mutter Mileva, einer Lehrerin. Rastko war der jüngere Bruder der bekannten Künstlerin Nadeshda Petrovi¿. Die Familie Petrovi¿ war in Belgrad sehr bekannt und angesehen. In seiner frühen Kindheit verlor er seine Mutter und wurde von seinen Schwestern aufgezogen. Von 1905 bis 1914 besuchte er die Grundschule und die unteren Klassen des Gymnasiums in Belgrad. Auf dem Höhepunkt des Balkankrieges 1912 brach er seine Ausbildung am Gymnasium ab. Im Ersten Weltkrieg ging er zunächst als Freiwilliger an die Front, durchquerte Albanien und zog nach Frankreich, wo er das Gymnasium in Nizza abschloss und als Stipendiat der französischen Regierung an der juristischen Fakultät in Paris studierte. In Paris traf er viele Dichter und Künstler und pflegte den Austausch mit ihnen. Er schrieb Gedichte, Erzählungen und Berichte über Kunstausstellungen. 1921 veröffentlichte er den einzigartigen komischen Roman über das Leben der alten Slawen mit dem Titel "Burlesque des Herrn Perun, des Gottes des Donners". Ende 1922 veröffentlichte er den Gedichtband "Offenbarung". Während all dieser Jahre arbeitete er in Belgrad aktiv mit zahlreichen Autoren wie Milan Dedinac, Marko Risti¿, Tin Ujevi¿ und anderen zusammen. Ihr Schaffen legte den Grundstein für den Surrealismus in Serbien. Später arbeitete er als Sachbearbeiter im Außenministerium und wurde Ende 1923 als Assistent eingestellt. Im Oktober 1926 wurde er zum Beamten in der Vertretung des Außenministeriums im Vatikan unter der Leitung von Milan Raki¿ ernannt. Raki¿ ermöglichte ihm Reisen durch Italien, Spanien, Frankreich und die Türkei und vor allem durch Afrika. So erschien 1930 sein großer Reisebericht mit dem Titel "Afrika". 1935 wurde er zum Vizekonsul sechsten Ranges im Generalkonsulat in Chicago ernannt. 1936 zog er nach Washington, um dort als Sekretär der Botschaft zu arbeiten. Er bereiste die USA, Kanada, Mexiko und Kuba. Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs blieb er in den USA, schrieb Gedichte für die Sammlung "Mitternächtliche Werke". Im Alter von 51 Jahren starb er am 15. August 1949 plötzlich an einer Krankheit in Washington. Er wurde auf dem Friedhof Shady Creek in Washington beigesetzt. 1986 wurden seine sterblichen Überreste nach Belgrad überführt.

Hailing from Portsmouth, Ben knew from experience that unfashionable places could be quietly brilliant. So, over the course of a year, the author of A Chip Shop in Poznan and The Gran Tour visited twelve of the least popular spots in the UK and Ireland for a city break. The motivation wasn't to take the mickey or stick the boot in, but to seek out the good stuff, to uncover the gems, to have a nice time. By doing so, he hoped to demonstrate that anywhere - like anyone - can be interesting and nourishing and enjoyable if approached in the right fashion. Ben went skiing in Sunderland, to the football in Wrexham, and fell in love with Dunfermline. He kissed an alpaca in Bradford, suffered jellied eels in Chelmsford, and had more craic in Limerick than was wise. The upshot is a celebration of the underdog; a love letter to the wrong direction; and evidence that there's no such thing as a shitty break. What's more, by spreading its affection beyond the usual suspects (which are often overdone and overpriced), Shitty Breaks promotes a less expensive and more sustainable brand of travel. By ghosting Bath and giving Lisbon the boot, the book champions the unsung in an algorithmic, over-signposted world dominated by celebs and hotspots. Cheeky weekend in Milton Keynes anyone?

Das Einhorn ist ein Konglomerat, ein Patchwork, zusammengesetzt aus den unterschiedlichsten legendären Elementen, die sich um das herausragende Mythologem und Fruchtbarkeitssymbol Horn gruppieren. Seine Wurzeln liegen in vorchristlicher Zeit, in Indien und China. Der Charakter des mythischen Tieres stellt sich nicht einheitlich dar. Es fallen drei dominante Komponenten ins Auge: Erstens, der wilde Aspekt, bekannt aus dem "Tapferen Schneiderlein": Das Untier ist gefährlich und angriffslustig - zoologisch beeinflusst vom indischen Panzernashorn. Zweitens, der gezähmte Aspekt: Es kann gezähmt und beruhigt werden, und zwar durch eine Frau, ob Hetäre oder reine Jungfrau. Die entscheidenden Impulse hierzu hat das Einhorn mit der Clan-Legende des Stammherren "Gazellenhorn" (¿¿yä¿¿ga) in Indien erfahren, Sohn eines Einsiedlers und einer Gazelle. Drittens, das Glückssymbol, welches sich von dem chinesischen Fabeltier 
 Qílín
 ¿¿ herleitet, einem liebenswerten Mischwesen, das in seiner Gestalt die Attribute mehrerer Tierarten auf sich vereint, wie es in der Vorstellungswelt des Animismus den "Herrn der Tiere" auszeichnet. Mit Wunderkräften versehen, wird das Unicorn schließlich zum Heils- und Friedensbringer für 
 alle

Mit Carl Zuckmayers Wechsel vom Ullstein Verlag zum S. Fischer Verlag nahm 1935 eine enge Freundschaft mit Peter Suhrkamp ihren Anfang, die dieser Briefwechsel dokumentiert.

Nach der 'Arisierung' des Ullstein Verlags 1934 fand Carl Zuckmayer, einer der erfolgreichsten Dramatiker der Weimarer Republik, im S. Fischer Verlag eine neue verlegerische Heimat. Dort war Peter Suhrkamp sein wichtigster Ansprechpartner bei der Vorbereitung der schließlich von den NS-Behörden verbotenen Veröffentlichung des Romans 'Salwàre oder die Magdalena von Bozen'. Damit nahm eine enge Freundschaft ihren Anfang. Sie war nicht zuletzt die Basis dafür, dass Zuckmayer nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg ebenso wie Bertolt Brecht die Verhandlungen mit deutschen Theatern über die Vergabe von Aufführungsrechten seiner Stücke ohne jedes Zögern Peter Suhrkamp anvertraute. Umgekehrt suchte Suhrkamp Zuckmayers Rat, als sich nach der Währungsreform abzeichnete, dass eine ursprünglich beabsichtigte Zusammenführung des von 1936 an von Suhrkamp geleiteten S. Fischer Verlags in Deutschland mit dem von Gottfried Bermann Fischer geleiteten Verlagsteil, der ins Exil gezwungen worden war, wegen wachsender Differenzen scheitern wird.
