This book examines the development of the Russian oil and gas industry over recent decades, showing how, in a series of in-depth case studies of previous international company involvement, international companies should in future cope with the business environment, how they should acquire local knowledge, deal with the state, and forge partnerships with domestic companies, but only to a limited extent.

Russia is the world’s largest producer of both oil and gas, with very significant reserves. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union the exploitation of oil and gas has taken place mainly in existing "Soviet legacy" fields, where established, relatively simple technologies were sufficient. This enabled the Russian state and local Russian entrepreneurs to be major players in the oil and gas industry, making use of international oil and gas companies and their expertise, but not wholly reliant on international companies. As the position is now changing, with "Soviet legacy" fields coming to the end of their lives, and with a growing need for more difficult fields to be exploited, requiring more advanced technology, the role of international companies is likely to be greater in future. These enduring conflicts present complex and evolving challenges—legal, (geo)political, institutional, humanitarian, developmental, and environmental—that demand new approaches. In response, policy frameworks increasingly advocate for the so-called Humanitarian-Development-Peace Nexus (the 'Triple Nexus'), which seeks to bridge traditionally siloed agendas in favour of a more integrated response to protracted conflict. Yet, despite growing policy interest, the legal dimensions of protracted conflict and the implications of the Triple Nexus remain under-explored in international law. From Protracted Conflict to Sustainable Peace? offers the first comprehensive legal and interdisciplinary examination of how international law engages with the realities of protracted conflict. The wealth of Tudor England was the object of much envy to less fortunate states in Europe. The main preoccupation of Tudor governments was to siphon a proper proportion of this wealth from the hands of its owners and creators into the hands of the state. Only with this transfer of resources, they believed, could the Tudor monarchy occupy its rightful place in the world. The consequence of this zealous pursuit of revenue is that Tudor statistics on wealth and property are copious and accurate. J. C. K. Cornwall used this hitherto underexploited resource to create a remarkably clear and comprehensive picture of early Tudor society in Wealth and Society in Early Sixteenth Century England (originally published in 1988). Through his pages can be sensed the efforts of the people to disguise their sources of income from the royal investigators, and the fiscal skill of the tax gatherers in finding out the truth, managing to extract both information and revenue from rich and poor alike.But what this evidence also shows is a pattern of breakdown in society. The rise in poverty, of those tramping the roads because they had lost everything, is a familiar complaint of Tudor governments. The author illustrates the effect of the forcible break-up of communities, as new industrial and agricultural practices were making rich men of those ruthlessly able to exploit their resources. His book is a fine and accurate portrait of a society in a somewhat brutal stage of transition, a picture all the more valuable because it quantifies precisely what up to now has been a more impressionistic and intuitive appraisal.
