The biographies in this volume outline the lives and impact of the last eight archbishops and electors of Trier. Some of them belonged to the major imperial dynasties, while some were members of the regional aristocracy. What they all had in common was that, in their double role as spiritual shepherds and worldly regents, they were confronted with the challenges presented by the Thirty Years’ War, the Enlightenment, and the French Revolution.
