Die Beiträge befassen sich mit Belletristik und Erinnerungsliteratur sowie Archivdokumenten, die entweder nach 1945 entstanden sind oder die Nachkriegszeit dokumentieren und sich vorwiegend mit den Folgen des Zweiten Weltkriegs beschäftigen. Kanadische Romane, Literatur aus Polen bzw. Oberschlesien, Werke von u.a. Heinz Piontek, Wolfdietrich Schnurre, Hanna Krall oder Géraldine Schwarz werden dabei ebenso untersucht wie die Lebenswege von Hans Marchwitza und Arnold Zweig. Das neue Demokratieverständnis nach 1945 oder die Lebensbedingungen von polnischen 'Displaced Persons' werden anhand von Archivmaterial und literarischen Texten beschrieben, der Blick von Sinti und Roma als Holocaustüberlebende auf das Kriegsende beleuchtet. Exemplarisch an einer bayerischen Kleinstadt wird der Umgang mit Funktionsträgern des ¿Dritten Reiches¿ in Spruchkammerverfahren und damit der Umgang mit der Vergangenheit untersucht. Ergänzt werden die Themenbeiträge durch Aufsätze u.a. zum Russlandbild zu Beginn des Ersten Weltkrieges in der Osnabrücker Tagespresse oder die Grenze zwischen Mexiko und den USA in verschiedenen Spielfilmen. Der Speyerer Historiker Rudolf Morsey (1927-2024) war eine der prägenden Figuren der Zeitgeschichtsforschung. Aus einem NS-resistenten katholischen Umfeld kommend, erlebte er Krieg, Gefangenschaft und Nachkriegsnot.
Er studierte in Münster Geschichte und habilitierte sich in Bonn mit einer Untersuchung über die Zentrumspartei und war über 60 Jahre ein ungemein produktiver Wissenschaftler. Zu seinem Forschungsschwerpunkt, dem Spannungsfeld von politischem Katholizismus, Zentrum und CDU, verfasste er zahlreiche Abhandlungen und gab eine Reihe von Editionen heraus. Zudem war er einer der einflussreichsten deutschen Wissenschaftsorganisatoren.
In seinen Erinnerungen berichtet er sehr persönlich über seinen Lebensweg und scheut auch nicht vor klaren Urteilen zurück. Ergänzt ist das Werk mit Bildmaterial aus seinem Leben sowie seinem Schriftenverzeichnis.

Mutter, Mutter, wie weit darf ich reisen

Ce livre rend hommage à une personne qui a été le voisin de l'auteur pendant de nombreuses années. L'auteur l'a appelé Léonidas le Grand dans cet ouvrage. Ce n'était pas son vrai nom, mais il lui allait bien et exprimait le fait qu'il était vraiment quelqu'un d'exceptionnel et de très spécial. Léonidas n'était pas particulièrement séduisant, il avait l'apparence d'un Grec typique, même s'il n'en était pas un. Il n'était ni bruyant ni autoritaire, mais il avait une autorité naturelle et parlait d'une voix douce. Il venait de quelque part de la région méditerranéenne. Il semblait avoir bénéficié d'une éducation et d'une culture de premier ordre, ce qui était certainement le reflet de ses origines nobles. Son destin, que l'auteur a parfois pu partager, ne semblait pas toujours avoir été très heureux, même si les apparences pouvaient laisser penser le contraire. Il avait en fait tout ce qu'on pouvait désirer, il était intelligent et apparemment aussi fortuné. On ne sait pas pourquoi il avait choisi précisément l'Allemagne pour s'y installer. Il n'y a pas trouvé le bonheur. Ce livre pourrait toutefois servir d'avertissement à tous les jeunes qui souhaitent s'installer dans un pays où la superficialité est la principale préoccupation de la société. Mais il pourrait également être utile à ceux qui ont conservé leur foi dans la culture de leurs pères, répandue en Europe du Nord, et leur esprit critique.
