This book explores the crisis of neo-classical economic theory in an attempt to explain developments in the post-war period. It explores two important aspects: strengthening the tradition of classical political economy (CPE) that arose in response to various critiques of neo-classical economic theory and exploring the potential of CPE to deal with issues of development.The advantage of an alternative to mainstream economic theory is that it can explain value, distribution, and developmental issues of capitalist as well as non-capitalist economies around the world. The chapters in this volume-written by eminent economists in honor of Krishna Bharadwaj-present a critique of the structure of neo-classical theory in terms of the scarcity approach and go deeper into the failure of the determination of a uniform rate of profit and limited substitutions of labor and capital. The volume resurrects Sraffa's system of production determining prices and the rate of profit allowing the possibility of output dynamics to be dealt with separately. Professor Wilken does not consider the problem of work primarily as a problem of economics: he regards it as an intensely philosophical problem, and discusses it in terms of ultimate human values. He gives practical examples of the problem of work by the use of case studies, and demonstrates how actual firms have tried to develop new modes of cooperation and associative partnership in business. Despite the 'return of financial crises' since the end of the Bretton Woods era, a new generation of bankers hardly had any experience or any memory of a previous systemic financial crisis. The events of summer 2007 prompted investors, CEOs, and regulators to investigate the past to understand the present and foresee the future. The 2008 financial crisis strengthened the need to place financial crises in long-term historical perspectives, establish parallels, and make comparisons. Such comparisons, however, have remained sparse and generally reduced past financial crises to stylized facts in a quest for lessons that could be drawn rather than analysed their specifics. This book is a contribution of history to the study of financial crises, with a focus on whether and how the memory of previous crises has persisted, faded, or changed over time. Intertwining memory and narrative representations of the reality, it investigates the reasons why some crises have been selectively remembered and others apparently forgotten. It does so with a focus on the new era of financial instability that followed the end of the Bretton Woods system of fixed exchange rates in 1973 - a period marked by a series of financial crises (1974, 1982, 1987, 1997, among others); economic, political, and cultural changes (globalization, deregulation, formalized mathematical economics), and culminating in the global financial crisis of 2008.

Michael Roe holds the Chair of Maritime and Logistics Governance at the University of Plymouth, UK. He previously worked with the Greater London Council and the Universities of Aston, Coventry, London Metropolitan and the University of London (City). Between 1604 and 2024, around 30,000 individuals were prosecuted for bigamy in England and Wales. A few were able to establish a defence to the charge, but most were convicted. How they were punished varied hugely across the centuries - from execution, branding, whipping, transportation, and imprisonment through to fines and community service. Double Trouble details the legal framework that underpinned such prosecutions. As a companion volume to Double Lives: Stories of Bigamy in England and Wales, 1604-2024, it sets the offence in the context of the changing laws on marriage and divorce, and examines the consequences of bigamy for those involved, including the remedies that were available to the often-deceived second spouse.
