Was könnte es bedeuten, die Welt zu verändern? Gedankenloser Gebrauch hat die Wendung gegenwärtig nahezu jedes spezifischen Sinnes entleert. Ein solcher konnte und kann ihr zukommen, sofern sie mit grundlegenden gesellschaftlichen Konflikten in Verbindung gebracht wurde und wird. Zu denken ist mit Blick auf die Moderne an den Kampf der Arbeiterschaft gegen ihre Ausbeutung, den Kampf kolonialer Untertanen gegen ihre Herren, den Kampf von Frauen gegen männliche Unterdrückung, sowie den Kampf eines schwerer zu fassenden Subjekts gegen die Verwüstung der Erde. Dass es in diesen Auseinandersetzungen darum gehen sollte, die Welt zu verändern, verlieh und verleiht ihnen eine Bedeutung, die scheinbar durch nichts zu überbieten ist. In dieser Weise aufs Ganze zu gehen hat allerdings seinen Preis. In Manifesten, die jenen Konflikten Weg und Ziel weisen sollten, zeitigt es Aporien, die sich im Verhältnis solcher Texte zu ihren jeweiligen Adressaten niederschlagen. Deren möglicher Unfolgsamkeit antwortet im Manifest die apokalyptische Warnung: Weltveränderung oder Untergang.

The Harms of Beauty

This book provides the first in-depth scholarly analysis of fraud, the highest volume crime in England and Wales, addressing the challenges faced in building a principled criminal law response by presenting an innovative normative analysis. The UK is now in a pandemic of fraud. There were 4.6 million fraud offences recorded in the year ending March 2021, accounting for 42% of all crime committed against individuals. Fraud is now the highest volume crime in England and Wales; its incidence in the first half of 2021 was described by UK Finance as a 'national security threat'. The book provides the answers to key questions, such as: - How can the rapidly changing nature of fraud be understood and mapped by criminal lawyers? - How does fraud connect to economic crime more broadly? - Is the current landscape for criminalising fraud fit for purpose, in the light of changes to the nature and complexity of wrongdoing? - What are the principled limits to using Artificial Intelligence technologies to detect and to penalise fraud? - Which principles should inform fraud criminalisation and governance following the COVID-19 pandemic, to meet the challenges of a digital age and a stretched criminal justice system?

The pivotal role of social media in understanding how justice-impacted individuals reconcile the past, establish the present, and project their future mediated lives What does it mean to be incarcerated in the age of social media? At any given moment, there are close to 2 million people incarcerated in American prisons and jails. This population is detached from friends, family, and, historically, from most technological advances. In the early 2010s, digital technology, particularly social media, experienced tremendous growth across the world, as more and more people began to spend time in these spaces, cultivating online personalities across a variety of platforms. In Prison Hashtags, Jan Haldipur and Calvin John Smiley tell the story of incarceration and reentry in America as seen through the images, videos, audio, and words of a group of people trying to make sense of it all on social media. For over six years, Haldipur and Smiley conducted a digital ethnography of the social media carceral landscape. They take an in-depth look at what they call the "social media-incarceration cycle," and how folks both in prison and returning to society post-incarceration utilize social media. Platforms like Instagram are often used to create community and network, as a public-facing digital journal and archive of their carceral odyssey, as well as a means to become entrepreneurs, activists, and so much more. Ultimately, Prison Hashtags offers an innovative understanding of the role that technology and social media can play in the lives of those who have served time behind bars.

 &nbsp;explores the evolving and emerging relationship between crime and technology in an increasingly complex and interconnected world, along with its implications for new perceptions of crime and deviance. It evaluates the rise of the World Wide Web and the model of cybercrime, questions whether existing criminological thought offers relevance and efficacy in current circumstances, conditions and future predictions, and revisits the concept of Relative Deprivation and&nbsp;the underpinning social psychological and socio-political foundations of it. It argues that&nbsp;Relative Deprivation&nbsp;allied to post-industrial precarity provides a central platform for understanding crime and deviance in a hyper-connected and hyper-commercial neoliberal world.&nbsp;The book develops to explore current criminological and security conceptions of artificial intelligence, big data, crime and social control, as well as hacktivism, and how opportunities for crime have become ‘democratised’ and expanded through the Web. Drawing&nbsp;on empirical data, theoretical narratives and a review of the state of crime now and in a speculative near future, Hamerton and Webber discuss some potential directions for a new transdisciplinary critical criminology.&nbsp;

How children's books, tv shows, cartoons, and films often reproduce stereotypes about "good guys" and "bad guys" in terms of crime, policing, and the role of the criminal justice system in society In Cops and Robbers, Liam Kennedy examines children's popular culture to provide an understanding of how ideas about crime and the criminal justice system are produced and challenged. Based on an analysis of over 220 books, 12 films, and hundreds of television episodes/short videos geared toward children, Cops and Robbers considers the ideological impacts of children's crime media messaging about what counts as a crime, the causes of crime, the roles and responsibilities of cops and other crime-fighters, as well as the nature and boundaries of justice. Kennedy demonstrates how kids' pop culture works to sustain the status quo and inhibits our ability to imagine alternatives to policing and prisons. He argues that children's crime media teaches them that it is correct to criminalize behaviors designated as threats to the capitalist social order, that the perpetrators of these acts are bad or even evil, unworthy of our sympathy, and usually incapable of change. Further, police and crime-fighters are shown to solve a wide array of community problems, produce peace and happiness, and require endless resources to preserve the social order and quell dissent. Finally, he finds that forced labor and incarceration are routinely framed as inevitable consequences – rather than policy decisions – for bad people who have made supposedly bad choices. Ultimately, Cops and Robbers will encourage social scientists, educators, and parents/guardians to think more critically about how children's crime media shapes ideas about crime, cops, and justice.
