Das liegt nicht nur an der intensivierten Begegnung und gesteigertem Wissen, sondern wesentlich an den sich verändernden Verstehensbedingungen im Zuge geistesgeschichtlicher Umbrüche in der Moderne, in deren Zentrum der Diskurs um Nihilismus steht. Während christliche Missionare und Intellektuelle ab dem 16. Jahrhundert im Buddhismus eine gottlose Verehrung des Nichts erkannten, bieten heute viele Gemeinden buddhistisch basierte Formen von Meditation an und Theologen oder Religionsphilosophen betonen die Gemeinsamkeiten in der Mystik. Der postu-lierte Nihilismus war eine Reaktion auf den Glaubwürdigkeitsverlust christlicher und klassisch-metaphysischer Denkweisen und verlangte nach alternativen Ansätzen. In der Philosophie und Theologie wich der Transzendenzbezug einer zunehmenden Betonung der Immanenz, der Sub-stanzbegriff einem Denken in Relationen und die Hoffnung auf begriffliche Erfassung der Wirk-lichkeit einer Öffnung für ihre Unverfügbarkeit.
