This book integrates diversified disciplines, research approaches, and methodologies of area studies, regional economic development, and regional science. With its huge population, China has accomplished rapid economic growth since the 1990s, although the significant income gap among regions and individuals has become a serious problem for its society. China's accession to the WTO in 2001 has had various influences on the entire food system, from agriculture to consumers, through the food manufacturing and distribution industries. The changes in the Chinese food system are considered to have also affected the agriculture and food industries in Asian countries where economic interdependence has been promoted in past decades. The author argues these issues based on interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary methods and approaches and has successfully derived empirical and theoretical results that are rich in policy implications. Environmental economics is growing rapidly. It is simply not sufficient to consider consumption, production, and welfare in isolation from the natural environment. Integrating ecological systems in economic analysis requires to take the possible occurrence of tipping points or regime shifts into account. This Element focuses on two recent developments in environmental economics theory. One is economic management of ecological systems with tipping points, with the lake as the classical example. The other one is investigating the consequences of uncertain possible shocks to parameters in economic models, with the carrying capacity in a fishery and total factor productivity (due to climate tipping) in Ramsey growth as examples. This book studies one part of the Sundarbans, the largest and one of the most fragile mangrove ecosystems in the world. The study is placed in the context of highly topical international debates on biodiversity, climate change and economic transformation, in a region of South Asia that still faces immense population pressure and severe poverty. An analysis of existing and potential future policies sets the debate in a comparative international perspective that has relevance well beyond the confines of South Asia.
 
 While there have been a large number of studies on the socio-economic aspects of physical quality of life in the Sunderbans, there are very few perception studies except at a basic level. The current volume has two major aspects. The first part contains a detailed study of overall 
 demography and objective life condition
 which includes (a) quality and ownership of private goods – equipment and machinery, livestock, house, land, consumer goods; (b) quality of public goods and amenities and their accessibility; (c) objective measures of relatively abstract factors related to social, political and familial environment such as quality of governance, extent of gender equality, social inclusion, social harmony, security, law and order, family bondings; (d) financial assets and indebtedness; (e) income and expenditure; (f) natural and man-made calamity, and; (g) vulnerability related to points (d), (e) and (f) above.
 
 The second part comprises a detailed study of 
 subjective life satisfaction, and value systems and priorities
 . The former refers to 
 people’s perception
 regarding the various facets of their 
 personal life
 - economic situation, standard of living, family and friends, work life and environment as also their 
 perception about the well-being of the community
 . This refers to the overall social, business, and political environment such as social and help network, social inclusion, communal harmony, participation in civic and social activities, job opportunities and employment generation, government developmental project initiatives, disaster management initiatives, law and order etc. 
 Value systems and priorities
 refer to individual rankings of the factors considered as necessary for personal happiness and for a happy society. It also includes their preferred rankings of government developmental initiatives and views regarding effectiveness and impact of such initiatives.&nbsp;

Measuring Quality of Life and Human Vulnerability in the Sunderbans Region of India

Seit Jahrzehnten steht Nachhaltigkeit für vielfältige Bemühungen, die sich multiplizierenden Krisen der globalen Moderne zu bewältigen. Obwohl diese nicht fruchten, hält man an ihren Prämissen fest, statt die Krisen neu zu analysieren und andere Lösungen zu testen. Wie kommt es zu dieser scheinbaren Alternativlosigkeit? Roland A. Römhildt analysiert in seiner Studie jene Semantiken, die sich seit etwa 1970 zum Nachhaltigkeitsdiskurs verdichtet haben und ihn bis heute prägen. Das Buch zeigt, dass der Diskurs gesellschaftliche Antworten auf gesellschaftliche Probleme hervorbringt und weder einen neuen Humanismus noch eine Politik im Rhythmus der Natur begründet. Darin ist Nachhaltigkeit beispielhaft für die weltformende Kraft der modernen Gesellschaft – des Soziozäns. Die ideenhistorische Neuverortung des Diskurses erhellt, dass er in einem gebrochenen Erbverhältnis zu alteuropäischen Vorstellungen guter Ordnung steht: In der dominanten Formel der »nachhaltigen Entwicklung« verbinden sich Bruchstücke solcher Vorstellungen mit gewandelten Fortschrittsideen. Im Soziozän bräuchte es im Umgang mit Krisen jedoch Konzepte, die chaotische Komplexität präziser erfassen und handhabbar machen.
