This textbook is intended for an undergraduate course on the fundamentals of parallel computing or as background and reference for graduate courses on high-performance computing, shared-memory multiprocessor programming, or parallel algorithms.The author introduces theoretical concepts and tools for expressing, analyzing, and assessing parallel algorithms, and covers in detail the two most widely used concrete frameworks OpenMP and MPI, plus the threading interface pthreads for writing parallel programs for either shared or distributed memory parallel computers with an emphasis on general concepts and principles. Code examples are given in a C-like style, and the extensive exercises can be used for self-study and as inspiration for small implementation projects in OpenMP and MPI.The book is appropriate for undergraduate and graduate students, and for professionals engaged in all aspects of parallel computing.

Digital Geographies

Global Digital Divides in the COVID-19 Era examines global digital divides prior to and during the pandemic, emphasizing internet and technology trends, spatial distributions, determinants, explanations, policy implications, and the aspiration of an equitable digital society. It analyzes purposeful use of the internet in the world and the majority of its major regions and countries. For digitally underserved economies, such as sub-Saharan Africa and parts of the Middle East, it is still appropriate to consider the traditional measures of technology access and use. In advanced economies, AI and machine learning are examined. This book identifies where deficits are located geographically, and also where the hot spots and cold spots are for levels of use and purposeful use of technologies. It points out the impacts of these technologies before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. For mature, inclusive, and equitable digital societies worldwide, attention has shifted from gaps in access to gaps in purposeful use of these technologies. For broadband, purposeful uses include e-commerce, e-health, e-entertainment, e-communication, e-education, and remote work. This book provides actual accounts of the digital divide challenges and successes in several case studies, such as the trailing usage of ICTs in Bolivia, the heightened purposeful use of e-commerce in Sweden and Denmark, and AI use in the US Silicon Valley. Finally, it recommends policies and steps that various national, state, and provincial governments can develop to narrow digital divides and improve the equity and inclusion of all their diverse citizens.

The field of AI Art is a hotbed for strange, uneasy partnerships between big tech, big art and critical culture. Not since Walter Benjamin's Age of Mechanical Reproduction has there been a similar challenge to humanist art criticism. This book examines how a contemporary critic should best engage with, contextualise and effectively critique machine-learning-based art. In considering this question, Nora Khan looks at the rush of institutions to place AI Art within an art-historical lineage while they simultaneously accept significant funding from technology companies. She discusses the scale and speed at which technological production, machine learning, and AI have abraded the individual's capacity for critical evaluation, moving us to consider what a shared, collective criticism of AI might sound like.
