Prison is neither the beginning of the inquiry nor the end. Thus, writers from across carceral institutions in the US unfold the multiple and intersecting ways that violence shapes and informs their lives, prior to, during, and after incarceration. Since the global financial crisis of 2008, there have been increasing frequency of global crises, including large-scale conflicts, the COVID-19 pandemic, the environmental crisis, and a general worsening of geopolitical tensions and structural inequality. Despite the global impact of these intersecting crises, the way in which they have been understood and responded to has been far from uniform. This edited volume focuses on the concept of ‘crisis’ through an interdisciplinary lens, analysing the term and comparing how it is being applied in different disciplines and across different sectors of society. 
The volume focuses on cases of crisis from Iceland, a small country with a high visibility in certain crises. The twelve papers collected in this volume of Research in Political Economy mark a new phase in the study of capitalism, centred on the reproduction of total social capital. They address the widely felt need to reconnect political economy with real-world phenomena, including financial crises, long-term stagnation, poverty, inequality, and economic injustice.
Seeking to renew pluralist dialogue among all currents critical of the dominant neoclassical paradigm-particularly those aiming to move beyond the equilibrium framework that permeates it-the volume offers important new insights into Marx's value theory. These constitute a significant addition to both the existing body of Marx studies and to a broader understanding of capitalist reproduction, accumulation, and the sources of their recurrent failures.

Capitalism is an economic system where almost all production and trade activities are organised by enterprises whose purpose is to maximise the return on the capital that has been invested in them. Economists, however, have almost universally defined capital in a way that makes it impossible for them to analyse important practical and societal aspects of the economic calculations of capital-based enterprises in capitalism.In contrast, this book develops a theory of capital that is, at the same time, a theory of capitalism. Based on the definition of capital provided by the Historical and Institutional Schools, and later developed by Carl Menger and Ludwig von Mises, the theory of capital in this book takes account of the term "capital" as understood and used in actual business life. A theory of capital that is successful in explaining the rationale of economic calculations of profit-oriented enterprises in the market economy will necessarily also explain how the societal production process is organised in capitalism. Starting from the positive analysis of capital and capitalism, the book discusses the fair value and shareholder value revolutions of recent decades. These approaches, sometimes summarised under the label of "value-orientation," have introduced theoretical neoclassical equilibrium concepts into the practice of enterprises in capitalism. The book argues that this has led to paradoxical and unsustainable results.
