Taikang Space is one of the most important non-profit art institutions in China. Based in Beijing, they focus on contemporary art and photography. Building off of their 2019 exhibition China Landscape: Selections from the Taikang Collection, this book studies 72 works from 55 Chinese artists. Following the structure of the exhibition - formulated by its curator, Tang Xin - China Landscape collects interpretative essays, historical details and information on Chinese literature and art policies, alongside biographical introductions to each artist.
The China Landscape exhibition demonstrates how Chinese cultural policies have developed in line with art trends since 1942. From Xu Bing's 'New English Calligraphy' series to Liu Xiaodong's early portraits of friends and family, this book serves as a key introduction to some of China's finest artists, and their place within contemporary socio-political context. Other featured artists include: Wu Zuoren, Liu Wei [Wei Li], Yang Jiechang, Xie Molin, Wu Dayu, Zhang Peili, Sui Jianguo.
