How a lifelong engagement with experimental art informed the brilliant Czech-Brazilian philosopher Vilém Flusser’s early vision of a world dominated by glowing screens. Predicting the importance of technology and images in the twenty-first century as early as the 1970s, Vilém Flusser warned, “the basic structure of our thinking is about to experience a mutation.” The bewitching images and screens that surround us could lead toward a centrally programmed, totalitarian society—or another, better one characterized by dialogue and collaboration among humans and new forms of intelligence. In this book on the idiosyncratic and prescient Czech-Brazilian philosopher, art historian and critic Martha Schwendener explores the profound effect of art on Flusser’s thought. The Society of the Screen reveals how Flusser’s lifelong engagement with experimental practices—from abstract painting and concrete poetry in Brazil to video, cybernetics, and photography in Europe and the United States—as well as his extensive involvement with the São Paulo Biennial informed his belief that we were moving from “history”—a civilization informed by linear writing—into “post-history,” dominated by technical images. The book delves deeply into how Flusser’s ideas evolved, particularly in correspondence and collaboration with artists like Mira Schendel, Fred Forest, Wen-Ying Tsai, Harun Farocki, Louis Bec, and Karl Gerstner.

In a period of expanding representation for women and LGBTQI+ people in cinema, television and other screen media, Judith Butler's groundbreaking writing on gender and identity is more relevant than ever. This is the first book to focus on the ways in which film has shaped the influential philosopher's thought. Since the 1980s, Butler's theories - particularly on 'gender performativity' - have been widely used to analyse representations of gender on screen. And equally, Butler has turned to films that spotlight drag performances and transgender people to re-examine the materiality of gender identity. In Judith Butler and Film, author Temmuz Süreyya Gürbüz explains how Butler cites growing up in the movie theatres their family owned as formational to their understandings of gender and sexuality, traces the influence of films such as Paris is Burning (1990) and Boys Don't Cry (1990) on their work, and also considers the documentaries Butler took part in. Moving beyond established film theory, Gürbüz draws from recent trans film theory, and also includes a final chapter on the idea of cinema as a form of embodiment - connecting this phenomenological approach with Butler's interest in experimental, collective and avant-garde filmmaking.

How 'Be Kind' Entrenches Sexism

Emphasizing Marx's commitment to the "democratic idea" from the time of his early work through his later writings, including his reflections on the Paris Commune, this book connects Marx's democratic, political critique and his economic theory. It argues that the communist project should be viewed as inseparable from a concern about both just social relations and the maintaining and empowering of democratic, political procedures. Marx's early works show that his critique of the state and capitalist, private property relations led to a demand to develop communal, discursively empowered agency over economic relations. Critically deploying the work of John Rawls and Jürgen Habermas, Morgan Horowitz develops a normative theory that clarifies structural requirements of economic equality and articulates "socialist right and rights," which would be better placed to realize the normative ideals of liberty and equality that have traditionally been espoused by liberal theorists. Horowitz evaluates Marx's theoretic developments to constructively connect to liberal, normative projects dedicated to democratic publics guiding and maintaining welfare-based societies, applying the framework to Picketty's popularity, Bernie Sanders's campaigns, and Covid economic inequality.

Offers an arts-based, storying, textual and visual lens on gender-based violence in the UK and Mexico. This book is a unique image-based bilingual (English and Spanish) book of textual and visual narratives of gender-based violence (GBV) in the UK and Mexico, framed with a critical commentary that sets these stories in the context of GBV in both countries. Visual and textual stories convey the 'felt' experience of GBV, engaging readers and audiences in the apparently mundane as well as the shocking. Such stories help contest the prominence of crime statistics in evidencing GBV, statistics which often distort experience and reflect and maintain exclusionary policies and practices, particularly for minoritised communities. The transnational project on which this book is based invited artists and creative writers from diverse backgrounds in the UK and Mexico to respond to lived accounts of GBV in comic stories, short stories, poems, 3D installations, fine art photography, painting and film. This book brings together these visual and textual stories and sets out a series of readings and analyses that seek to further knowledge on GBV in different cultural contexts. This book is open access under a CC BY licence.

Deleuzo-Guattarian philosophy provides crucial insights for assessing the post-neoliberal era in this cutting-edge volume of anti-capitalist scholarship. It maps the critical new assemblages emerging out of decades of neoliberalism to diagnose contemporary and future discontent.
