In Food and Feast in Premodern Outlaw Tales editors Melissa Ridley Elmes and Kristin Bovaird-Abbo gather eleven original studies examining scenes of food and feasting in premodern outlaw texts ranging from the tenth through the seventeenth centuries and forward to their cinematic adaptations. Along with fresh insights into the popular Robin Hood legend, these essays investigate the intersections of outlawry, food studies, and feasting in Old English, Middle English, and French outlaw narratives, Anglo-Scottish border ballads, early modern ballads and dramatic works, and cinematic medievalism. The range of critical and disciplinary approaches employed, including history, literary studies, cultural studies, food studies, gender studies, and film studies, highlights the inherently interdisciplinary nature of outlaw narratives. The overall volume offers an example of the ways in which examining a subject through interdisciplinary, cross-geographic and cross-temporal lenses can yield fresh insights; places canonic and well-known works in conversation with lesser-known texts to showcase the dynamic nature and cultural influence and impact of premodern outlaw tales; and presents an introductory foray into the intersection of literary and food studies in premodern contexts which will be of value and interest to specialists and a general audience, alike.

This volume collects eleven essays together with a contextualizing introduction examining the relationship between outlaws, food, and feasting in the literature and culture of the premodern British Isles and France, c. 10th-17th centuries.

Following in the tradition of recent work by cultural geographers and historians of maps, this collection examines the apparently familiar figure of Robin Hood as he can be located within spaces that are geographical, cultural, and temporal. The volume is divided into two sections: the first features an interrogation of the literary and other textually transmitted spaces to uncover the critical grounds in which the Robin Hood 'legend' has traditionally operated. The essays in Part Two take up issues related to performative and experiential space, demonstrating the reciprocal relationship between page, stage, and lived experience. Throughout the volume, the contributors contend with, among other things, modern theories of gender, literary detective work, and the ways in which the settings that once advanced court performances now include digital gaming and the enactment of 'real' lives.

Food and Feast in Modern Outlaw Tales

This collection of scholarly essays presents new work from an emerging line of inquiry: modern outlaw narratives and the textual and cultural relevance of food and feasting. Food, its preparation and its consumption, is presented in outlaw narratives as central points of human interaction, community, conflict, and fellowship. Feast scenes perform a wide variety of functions, serving as cultural repositories of manners and behaviors, catalysts for adventure, or moments of regrouping and redirecting narratives. The book argues that modern outlaw narratives illuminate a potent cross-cultural need for freedom, solidarity, and justice, and it examines ways in which food and feasting are often used to legitimate difference, create discord, and manipulate power dynamics.

King and Commoner tales were hugely popular across the late medieval and early modern periods, their cultural influence extending from Robin Hood ballads to Shakespearean national histories. This study represents the first detailed exploration of this rich and fascinating literary tradition, tracing its development across deeply politicized fifteenth-century comic tales and early modern ballads.The medieval King and Commoner tales depict an incognito king becoming lost in the forest and encountering a disgruntled commoner who complains of class oppression and poaches the king’s deer. This is an upside-down world of tricksters, violence, and politicized feasting that critiques and deconstructs medieval hierarchy. The commoners of these tales utilize the inversion of the medieval carnival, crowning themselves as liminal mock kings in the forest while threatening to rend and devour a body politic that would oppress them. These tales are complex and ambiguous, reimagining the socio-political upheaval of the late medieval period in sophisticated ruminations on class relations. By contrast, the early modern ballads and chapbooks see the tradition undergo a conservative metamorphosis. Suppressing its more radical elements amid a celebration of proto-panoptical kings, the tradition remerges as royalist propaganda in which the king watches his thankful subjects through the keyhole.

The war in the Far East from 1939 to 1945, as witnessed first-hand by Scottish soldier and celebrated documentarian Harry BirrellFrom the moment he received a cine-camera at age 10, Harry Birrell devoted his life to documenting the world around him, including his enlistment and his adventures serving in the Burma, Nepal and India. Not only did he capture the war as he saw it, but he kept copious diaries from 1939 to 1945 so that his family would know what he had experienced in the event of his death. These unique record of the campaign are compelling, insightful, funny, charming, moving - all in equal measure. As a soldier posted with the Gurkhas for most of the war, Harry Birrell worked as a surveyor, mapping out the country as the war with the Japanese ebbed and flowed around him. While this might seem like it was away from any action, the job of creating these references for the fighting part of the army was critical and required him to be at the front line in order that the troops and their commanders had the most up to date and accurate maps as the war evolved. As a result, he has an unusual insider overview of that brutal campaign as well as wonderful insight into the Gurkhas under his command.

A provocative letter from a prominent eighteenth-century British noblewoman, Henrietta Howard, to her close friend Mary Hervey is a rare survivor of the informal, collaborative satires created by court women in this period. This particular June 1729 artifact contains a witty and light-hearted list of imaginary portraits, most of which refer to a notable political figure through references to specific paintings, sculptures, engravings, ceramics, textiles and book illustrations. Through a close reading of archival manuscripts, published correspondences and art historical treatises, Eric Weichel explores the cultural milieu and historical legacy of this remarkable text. Constrained by strict standards of moral propriety, the writer's overt discussions of sexuality in this letter are encoded through a system of embedded jokes and mythological references. Weichel argues that through Lady Hervey's mention of popular works of art, such as the Hampton Court tapestry cartoons by Raphael, the 'Jupiter and Ganymede' motif in country house décor, or the illustrated fables of Jean de La Fontaine, she alludes specifically to her wider circle's knowledge of adultery, queerness, sexual violence, and divorce among their peer group. In her imaginary portraits, Hervey also shows an interest in feminist education and literature, political and religious patronage, and contemporary news events.

The book examines how the consumption of popular culture has been related to the changing geopolitical situation, to the politics of economic transformation, and to community building. It shows how behind all these aspects of popular culture lies the essential "in-between-ness" of Hong Kong, neither Eastern/traditional/conservative nor Western/modern/liberal.

In fact, these poems dwell as much if not more on foul displays of human physicality as on depictions of a sublime heroism, prioritize psychological disturbance over tragic suffering, and set the intrusions of unquiet ghosts in tension with celebrations of the safely dead. This book thus offers a fresh perspective on a literary genre that is central both to ancient cultures and to the later western tradition. Alongside happy recollections of past glories, ancient epics offer readers a shocking and immersive experience that confronts them with the bare facts of human physiques and minds. Rather than focusing narrowly on the eminent achievements of a few, horror in epic offers an egalitarian portrait of what makes us human.
